2011 Curry Stone Design Prize Winners
The 2011 Curry Stone Design Prize Winners were recently announced with an official presentation ceremony to follow on November 7th at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Hsieh Ying-Chun is the Grand Prize Winner; he will receive $100,000 from the foundation with no strings attached. Hsieh is a leading Taiwanese architect who for over a decade has deployed his talents in rural areas decimated by natural disaster. Hsieh works throughout Asia, training villagers to build locally appropriate dwellings in response to devastation such as the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. Two additional 2011 Winner Prizes, of $10,000 each, will be awarded to Atelier d’Architecture Autogérée (AAA) and FrontlineSMS. More information on the prize winners after the break. (more…)
DesignByMany Rapidly-Deployable Shade Winner / Arcollab
SHRM‘s Umbra_vela was announced as the winner of DesignByMany‘s latest challenge: “A Rapidly-Deployable Shade Structure”. The challenge asked professionals and students in the AEC community to submit proposals for a rapidly-deployable shade structure that could just as easily be deployed during a day at the beach or park, or in a desert environment. SHRM were chosen by a select group of judges, Andrew Payne, David Benjamin and Kevin Klinger. For winning the HP-supported challenge, SHRM will take home a brand-new HP Designjet T790 24″ PostScript ePrinter.
Update: Museum of Ocean and Surf / LEAF Awards / Steven Holl
On June 26 of this year, Steven Holl’s Museum of Ocean and Surf opened in Biarritz, France, and we recently learned that the building has been named the Public Building of the Year by the 2011 Emirates Glass LEAF Awards. Designed in collaboration with Solange Fabião, the museum has a strong connection between the sea and the built environment both on the programmatic level as the museum serves as a “teaching tool” to educate people about the health of the ocean, and on a formal level as the massing was conceptually influenced by “ under the sky and under the sea.” Yesterday, we shared an amazing clip from our interview with Steven Holl about the museum – check it out and tell us your thoughts on the project.

WOHA receives 2011 RIBA Lubetkin Prize
The Met in Bangkok, Thailand by WOHA has scooped the Royal Institute of British Architects’ (RIBA) prestigious RIBA Lubetkin Prize for the most outstanding work of international architecture by a member of the RIBA.
A residential skyscraper incorporating outdoor spaces, balconies and gardens, The Met is a 66 storey perforate tower which uses the power of nature to cool the apartments. Wind speeds at that height are considerable, so by punching holes through the building and drawing air up vertical voids in the structure, the architects have been able to introduce natural ventilation to flats at all levels. Some of these floors are kept open to provide communal spaces, which include a garden, a gym, a 50 metre swimming pool and other leisure facilities, such as barbecue and seating areas. The Emirates Glass LEAF Awards 2011
The 9th Annual Emirates Glass LEAF Awards recently announced the winning projects and proved to be a huge success attracting a whole host of recognizable faces from the architectural community. This spectacular evening took place in the stunning surroundings of the Landmark hotel which was admired by the many guests that attended. 2011 ECCS Structural Steel Design Award / JDS Architects
JDS Architects’ Holmenkollen Ski Jump in Oslo, Norway has been announced as the winner of the 2011 ECCS Structural Steel Design Award at the ECCS Congress in Postdam, Germany. The award recognizes outstanding design in steel construction emphasizing the many advantages of steel in construction, production, economy and architecture.
The European Steel Design Awards are given by the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS) every two years to encourage the creative and outstanding use of steel in architecture and construction. For more information about ECCS, visit here.
2011 Jencks Award: Eric Owen Moss
The annual Jencks Award, organized by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), is given each year to an architect who has made a major contribution to both the theory and practice of architecture. This year, the award is given to architect, Eric Owen Moss.
Eric Owen Moss has, over 30 years, evolved a unique local grammar of architecture in Culver City, Los Angeles. Here he has created a modern vernacular that is at once creative, critical and evocative – showing a commitment to place and character that is rare if not unique.

AIA Arkansas 2011 Convention
Last week I had the honor to be an invited speaker to the 2011 AIA Arkansas Convention in Hot Springs, AR.
The event featured a great group of speakers such as Hicks Stones (Stone Architecture), Rand Elliott (FAIA, Elliott + Associates Architects), Maitland Jones (Deborah Berke & Partners Architects), Steve Dumez (FAIA, Eskew + Dumez + Ripple), David Miller (FAIA, Miller/Hull Partnership), Matthew Kreilich (Julie Snow Architects, Inc.), Kevin Alter (Alter Studio) and Tim Hursley (Architecture photographer).
During the convention I had the opportunity to meet a wide group of local architects, such as renowned architect Marlon Blackwell, Chris Baribeau from Modus Studio (recipient of the 2011 AIA Arkansas Emerging Professional Award), among other local architects. I had also the opportunity to visit the Anthony Chapelby Maurice Jennings + David McKee Architects (Maurice Jennings was partner of E. Fay Jones for 25 years), an incredible piece of architecture.
Awards during the convention include local architect Charles Witsell, Jr (FAIA, founding partner and senior, Witsell, Evans & Rasco, Architects/Planners), recipient of the Fay Jones Gold Medal Award, and the Arkansas Chapter of the USGBC, recipient of the Award of Merit.
The 2011 Design Awards, announced last Friday, are a good snapshot of the current state of architecture in the southern state.

International LEAF Awards 2011: Diagonal 00 Telefonica Tower designated Best Commercial Building of the Year
Diagonal 00 Telefonica Tower in Barcelona, designed by the architect Enric Massip-Bosch_EMBA and developed by Consorci de la Zona Franca de Barcelona, has been awarded the LEAF PRIZE 2011 for Best Commercial Building of the Year.
LEAF AWARDS are one of the most prestigious international yearly architecture prizes. The best practices around the world compete in the different categories of these coveted awards with their most significant projects.
Diagonal 00 Telefonica Tower has been chosen as the best commercial building of the year among a selected group of shortlisted international projects. Developed by Consorci de la Zona Franca de Barcelona, the tower hosts since January this year the headquarters of Telefonica Group in Catalonia and its R+D Center, a world leader in multimedia and internet research, reflecting the multinational’s focus on innovation.
Diagonal 00 Telefonica Tower is a 86 million Euro investment by Consorci de la Zona Franca and is a clear example of Consorci’s and Telefonica’s decided goal towards architectonic and technological excellence. The building hosts in it’s 24 floors the corporate activity of the multinational in Catalonia and has a 350 seats lecture hall . It is also the first such corporate building to be opened to the public, since it has a permanent showroom on the ground floor open to the public in which the latest advances in technology are displayed.
Coop Himmelb(l)au Wins Two International Awards
This summer Coop Himmelb(l)au recieved two awards for two different buildings in Europe. The Dedalo Minosse International Prize was awarded for the firm’s design of BMW Welt in Munich on June 24, 2011 in Vicenza, Italy. According to the president of the Italian Association ALA, Bruno Gabbiani, who presented the award, the prize boosts “the quality of architecture looking at final result, analysing and focusing on project and constructive plan process and giving special attention to people who determine the success of the work: the architect and the client”. The awarded works, with Coop Himmelb(l)au among them, will be presented at the CISA, Cento Studi di Architecttura Palladio in Vicenza until September 18, 2011. DesignByMany Community Award Winners / Sasa Djak & Milica Vujovic
Competition participants, Sasa Djak and Milica Vujovic recently won the community’s vote as best Rapidly-Deployable Shade Structure in the DesignByMany competition. Steven Holl Architects’ Horizontal Skyscraper Wins American Architecture Award
Steven Holl Architects recently received an American Architecture Award for 2011 for the Horizontal Skyscraper-Vanke Center in Shenzhen, China.The awards, administered annually by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Center for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies honor ‘new and cutting-edge design’ and aim to promote ‘the best of new architecture and urban design.’ More on the project after the break. Laurie Olin / Landscape Architects 2011 Medal for Lifetime Achievement
The Board of Trustees of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) has chosen Laurie Olin as the recipient of the 2011 ASLA Medal, the highest honor the organization bestows upon a landscape architect. The Medal is given to those whose lifetime achievements and contributions to the profession have had a unique and lasting impact on the welfare of the public and the environment. Olin will accept the award at the ASLA’s annual meeting to be held in San Diego from October 30 through November 2.
Texas Society of Architects’ 25-Year Award Presented to I. M. Pei & Partners’ Fountain Place
Each year the Texas Society of Architects recognizes a building that was completed 25-50 years ago which they believe has “stood the test of time by retaining its central form, character, and overall architectural integrity”. This year, the prestigious honor is awarded to Fountain Place, designed by Henry Cobb of I. M. Pei & Partners and completed back in 1986 in Dallas, Texas.

Our perspective begins with the most personal of the individual, to ever expanding rings of reference and community. This year’s 2011 AIA Honor Awards for Washington Architecture recognizes the transformative potential of vision in shaping our work and our communities.
We invite the design community to engage in the conversation of the Awards and submit your perspective whether realized, latent, or an idea in the pursuit of design excellence. This year’s esteemed jury and moderator will share their perspective in an engaging evening of dialogue at Benaroya Hall.
Domus Technica: Immmergas Center for Advanced Training / Iotti + Pavarani Architetti
The Renzo Piano Foundation has selected the winner of the first edition prize reserved for Italian Architects under 40. The studio Iotti + Pavarani Architetti in Reggio Emilia was awarded the first prize for their project Domus Technica. The award, promoted by the Italian Association of Architecture and Criticism directed by Luigi Prestinenza Puglisi, received more than seventy entries screened by a single juror: Renzo Piano. The Renzo Piano Foundation selected the project Domus Technica: the new Immmergas Center for Advanced Training by Iotti + Pavarani Architetti as the winner of the first edition of the prize, promoted by the Italian Association of Architecture and Criticism (AIAC) and chaired by Luigi Prestinenza Puglisi, which is awarded to up-and-coming architects under 40.

The Emirates Glass LEAF Awards 2011
Entries from across the globe have flooded in, with some of the world’s most iconic buildings being shortlisted to set the benchmark for the Architectural world in 2011. This year looks set to be the toughest competition yet. With practices flying in from all over the globe, The Emirates Glass LEAF Awards 2011 is now regarded by many of the world’s architectural community as the annual event for viewing quality international design and build projects.
The awards will be celebrated and honored at London’s Landmark Hotel on September 16th, 2011 for the buildings and design solutions that are setting the benchmark for the future of architecture and design. The Architectural community from across the globe will gather at The Emirates Glass LEAF Awards which will double up as an international networking event. This gathering of industry experts will include a judging panel comprising of key individuals drawn from various areas of the international architectural design and construction community. FGMF wins the Internazionale Dedalo Minosse award
The FGMF architects office, under the command of the young architects Fernando Forte, Lourenço Gimenes and Rodrigo Marcondes Ferraz and placed in São Paulo, Brazil, has just won one more international award: “The international award Dedalo Minosse”-“Prêmio Internazionale Dedalo Minosse”, delivered in Vicenza, Italy, on June 24th 2011, at CISA (Andrea Palladio Centro Internacional de Estudos de Arquitetura – Andrea Palladio International Center for architecture studies). This is one of many awards received by FGMF, being the most awarded architecture Office in Brazil in the year of 2010. More information on their award after the break.
