Edward Mazria, Founder and CEO of Architecture 2030, Wins This Year’s Purpose Prize
Edward Mazria, architect, founder and CEO of Architecture 2030 was awarded this year’s Purpose Prize. His work over the past eight years, after founding Architecture 2030, has set numerous environmental goals for the building industry. It has also brought many issues of sustainable design to the forefront of conversations and policies about buildings and their construction. Watch the video for more information!

2012 Driehaus Prize / Michael Graves
Michael Graves has been chosen as the 2012 Driehaus Laureate, honoring his lifetime contributions to classical and traditional architecture in the modern world. The jury praised Graves for his “brilliant combinations of tradition and imagination” within his architecture and product design, stating that his deep understanding and respect of the past allows him to enrich the architectural process.
“Michael Graves has enhanced not just the architecture profession with his talent and scholarship, but everyday life itself through his inspiring attention to beautiful and accessible design,” says Michael Lykoudis, Driehaus Prize Jury Chair and Francis and Kathleen Rooney Dean of the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture. “The quality and scope of his work have enhanced how people work, live, and interact in public and private realms, making a profound impact on American life.”

AIA selects George Baird recipient of 2012 Topaz Medallion
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Board of Directors and the Association of Collegiate Schools for Architecture (ACSA) has selected George Baird, Intl. Assoc. AIA recipient of the 2012 AIA/ACSA Topaz Award for excellence in architectural education. Baird is known for his extensive association with the University of Toronto’s architecture school and for being one of Canada’s most celebrated architects. His award-winning firm Baird Sampson Neuert was founded in Toronto in 1972. (more…)
DesignByMany Pop-up Retail Store Winner / Arcollab
Arcollab‘s “Jack Up The Box” pop-up store concept was selected winner of the DesignByMany’s latest challenge: “A Pop-Up Retail Store”. Vertical retractable drawers embedded within the raised store allow shoppers to inhabit the space underneath, redefining the shopping experience. Judges Carmen Trudell, Daniel Kidd, and Giancarlo Valle reviewed over 40 entries before selecting the winning proposal. For winning the HP-supported challenge, RPGS will take home a brand-new HP Designjet T790 24″ PostScript ePrinter. (more…)
VJAA receives 2012 AIA Architecture Firm Award
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Board of Directors (BOD) selected Minneapolis based firm VJAA for the 2012 AIA Architecture Firm Award. The internationally recognized design firm was noted for their “research into material innovations and digital practice tools.”
“VJAA creates a place and purpose-specific architecture founded on broad societal, technological, and artistic values. Their work eloquently demonstrates the creative possibilities of joining environmental innovation, material exploration, and a thoughtful and economical response to site and program,” stated Andrea Leers, FAIA, of 2007 Firm Award recipient Leers Weinzapfel Associates in her recommendation letter.
The AIA highlighted VJAA’s Charles Hostler Student Center in Beirut, Lebanon and Lavin-Bernick Center for University Life at Tulane University in New Orleans. Leers continues to describe, “In an era frequently characterized by architectural indulgence and excess, VJAA is creating architecture of refinement and restraint.”
Along with AIA Gold Medal winner Steven Holl, VJAA will also be awarded in May at the 2012 AIA National Convention in Washington, D.C.

Steven Holl awarded 2012 AIA Gold Medal
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Board of Directors has awarded Steven Holl, FAIA with the annual AIA Gold Medal. The Gold Medal represents the highest award an architect may receive, honoring their “humanist approach to formal experimentation.” The world renowned architect and Columbia University professor continues to inspire and influence the practice and theory of architecture.
In a recommendation letter, Harry Cobb, FAIA, of Pei Cobb Freed stated, “What, in my view, especially commends him as a candidate for the Gold Medal is his brilliantly demonstrated capacity to join his refined design sensibility to a rigorously exploratory theoretical project.”
The AIA highlighted two of Holl’s projects – Linked Hybrid in Beijing and Vanke Center in Shenzhen – stating they are “emblematic of his approach to architecture and his innovative method of design inquiry.”
“I am grateful, I am still beginning and I consider this award shared with all my collaborators. I feel this award is a positive advocacy to make theoretical explorations and experimental works. I was on the way to my final review at Columbia University when I received the call from Washington D.C. and felt it connected to my teaching and efforts toward education. I remember John Hejduk’s statement that teaching is a social contract, and I remain committed to teaching.”

SOM receives 2011 Firm of the Year Award
The AIA Chicago chapter has awarded the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM) the 2011 Firm of the Year Award for 75 years of global design excellence. The chapter recognized the outstanding achievements and excellence in the firm’s body of work and their contribution to the advancement of the architectural profession in areas of design, research, planning, technology and architectural practice. This is the highest AIA award a firm can receive.
The Firm Award Jury stated, “Skidmore Owings & Merrill is the jury’s unanimous choice for AIA Chicago’s 2011 Firm of the Year. It is evident in the submission that SOM has a distinct culture that is collaborative and team-oriented with a history of high aspirations for design excellence. For the professional community, SOM’s innovation continues to impact and inform tall building design around the world, while it is also evident that SOM is an involved and active citizen of Chicago, reaching outside of itself to positively impact the community and its organizations.”
A celebration will take place at the AIA Chicago annual meeting and awards presentation on Friday, December 9th, 2011 at ReBuilding Exchange in Chicago, Illinois.

London-based architect David Adjaye was selected for the 2011 Designer of the Year Award by Design Miami – a global forum for design that highlights influential collectors, gallerists, designers, curators and critics from around the world, presenting annual fairs in Miami, USA and Basel, Switzerland. Design Miami praised Adjaye for his “ingenious use of materials and unique ability to showcase light coupled with his democratized approach to the architectural process.”

International 2011 Piranesi Awards
Piran Days of Architecture (PDA) is an international architectural conference with one of the oldest traditions in the world. First presented in 1983 it is held every year at the end of November in the charming, medieval Slovene town Piran. The aim of the conference is to asses current trends in architecture and to present the most progressive and innovative ideas of architectural and spatial production. The conference is traditionally accompanied by several architectural exhibitions. The most important is the international architectural exhibition of recent works by Central European architects which compete for the distinguished international Piranesi Award, which went to Marte.Marte Architekten this year. The Holcim Awards 2011 for Asia Pacific Winners
The Asia Pacific winners of the Holcim Awards for sustainable construction were recently announced in Singapore. The Holcim Awards is an international competition that recognizes innovative projects and future-oriented concepts on regional and global levels. The competition is designed to encourage architects, planners, engineers and project owners to go beyond conventional notions of sustainable construction in their work and to harmonize ecological, social and economic concerns. Projects and concepts in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, civil engineering, mechanical engineering and related fields are eligible for entry in the competition. Estudio Barozzi Veiga: 5th Edition International Biennial of Architecture Barbara Cappochin Prize Winners
The winners of the 2011 International “Barbara Cappochin” Prize for Architecture are two young emerging talents in the field of contemporary architecture, the Italian architect Fabrizio Barozzi and the Spanish architect Alberto Veiga: it is their project, a Promotional Centre for the D.O.C. wine: “Ribera del Duero” in Roa, Spain, which was unanimously chosen by the judges “because it merges the qualities of aesthetics, functionality and sustainability for which the Prize is awarded”. 2012 National Design Awards: Nominate Now!
The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum is now accepting nominations for the 13th annual National Design Awards – honoring lasting achievement in American design. “The awards are bestowed in recognition of excellence, innovation, and enhancement of the quality of life.”
Citizens and long-term residents of the United States and corporations or institutions headquartered in the country are eligible. Nominees must have been professionally practicing for a minimum of seven years. Awards are not focused on specific projects, but rather an entire body of realized work.

Fentress Architects Honored with Six Awards
Fentress Architects was recently honored with six awards from the Chicago Athenaeum, the American Institute of Architects, and the Design Build Institute of America for their design of the most technologically-advanced airport in the nation, a national museum in D.C. showcasing the history of the Marine Corps and two mixed-use high rises in the United Arab Emirates.

WEISS/MANFREDI receives 2011 Chicago Athenaeum American Architecture Award
The Diana Center, a 98,000 square-foot multipurpose arts building at Barnard College designed by WEISS/MANFREDI Architecture/Landscape/Urbanism, is the winner of a 2011 Chicago Athenaeum American Architecture Award. The project will be exhibited in Buenos Aires at the 13th International Architecture Biennial in October, and will be on display throughout Europe in the next year.
Established in the 1990s by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, together with The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and Metropolitan Arts Press Ltd., the awards program honors and celebrates the most outstanding new achievements and innovations for new architecture. Past recipients of the award include Renzo Piano, Perkins + Will, Eric Owen Moss and other leading architecture firms with distinguished projects designed and built in the United States. which makes this award such an honor.
The Diana Center establishes a new nexus for social, cultural, and intellectual life on campus and within the city. Located on Broadway, the Diana Center unites landscape and architecture, interior and exterior in a seven-story structure that rethinks the conventions of a mixed use building. The building is home to the departments of architecture, art history, visual arts, and theater and includes architecture and painting studios, a 500-seat events space, black box theater, cafe, dining room, reading room, classrooms, and exhibition galleries.
gmp Architekten receives IOC/IAKS Award 2011
The stadiums built by the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa received the IOC/IAKS Award on 26 October 2011. In the context of the international Trade Fair for Amenity Areas, Sports and Pool Facilities (FSB), the International Olympic Committee and the International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS) selected the Cape Town stadium for first prize and the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in Port Elizabeth for third prize in the “stadiums for competitions and events” category. Apogee Stadium Awarded LEED Platinum Certification / HKS Architects
The United States Green Building Council has awarded the University of North Texas’ Apogee Stadium, designed by HKS Architects and built by Manhattan Construction Company, a LEED Platinum Certification, making it the first newly constructed collegiate football stadium in the nation to achieve the highest level of LEED certification.
The 31,000-seat Apogee Stadium features luxury suites, an amenity-filled club level, a Spirit Store, a corporate deck and a unique end-zone seating area. In addition to hosting UNT events, it will serve the entire North Texas region as a venue for outdoor concerts, community events, high school games and band competitions. 2011 AIA Seattle Honor Awards for Washington Architecture
The AIA Seattle chapter recognized nineteen projects for design excellence from across the state of Washington. An extensive collection of 140 submittals were reviewed, resulting in the selection of ten institutional, seven residential, and two commercial projects. The general theme showed an integration of sustainability into architectural work, stating that the “old discussion of green design in opposition to good design argument is history.”
Nancy Levinson, Editor of Places/Design Observer, moderated the packed event at Benaroya Hall. The competition was juried by Marlon Blackwell FAIA (University of Arkansas), Martin Felsen AIA (Chicago) and Jennifer Yoos (Minneapolis). Co-Chairs were Wendy Pautz AIA of LMN Architects and Guy Michaelsen ASLA of the Berger Partnership.

PLANT Receives Honorable Mention for NPS Roof Garden
PLANT Architecture has recently been recognized with an Honorable Mention in the City of Toronto’s Urban Design Awards. Held every other year, the awards acknowledge the contributions design has on the local milieu. PLANT’s revitalization of the Nathan Phillips Podium Square (part of Toronto’s iconic City Hall by Viljo Revell) introduces a greenscape to the podium previously occupied solely with a vast hardscaped plaza.
