Steven Holl wins 2010 Jencks Award
It has been a busy few months for Steven Holl Architects. Just hours ago, we shared his Daeyang Gallery which is in construction in Korea. We’ve received tons of feedback after sharing pictures of his Horizontal Skyscraper in Shenzhen, China, not to mention his Nanjing Museum of Art & Architecture, which is currently in progress. And, the firm has just recently been asked to design the New Queens Library at Hunters Point. So, it doesn’t come as too much of a surprise that Holl was awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects as this year’s recipient of the 2010 Jencks Award!

Update: 12th International Architecture Exhibition Venice
Continuing our coverage of Kazuyo Sejima’s exciting 2010 Venice Biennale, the International Jury of the exhibition has recently awarded a Golden Lion for the best project of the ‘People Meet in Architecture’ Exhibit to Junya Ishigami+ Associates, a Golden Lion for the best National Participation to the Kingdom of Bahrain, and a Silver Lion for a promising young participant to OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen + Bas Princen. We’ve featured Ishigami + Associates’ work previously on AD, and his Venice exhibit explores similar ideas about transparency and structure evident in his elegantly simplistic Kanagawa Institute of Technology.

Structural Steel Design Awards 2010 / Zaha Hadid
In addition to being asked to design Baghdad’s newest banking headquarters as we reported previously, Zaha Hadid has also been recognized at the Structural Steel Design Awards. The awards, which are in their 42nd year, are bestowed upon those who attain excellence in both architectural and structural design with the use of steel. Hadid’s Legacy Roof (alongside Audi West London, the Infinity Footbridge in Stockton-on-Tees, and Dublin Airport Terminal 2) was awarded for its “heroic engineering achievement”. Working with Arup, Rowecord Engineering Ltd and Balfour Beatty Group Ltd, the team has designed an amazing structure to house the Aquatic Center for the Olympic Games in London. When we first introduced Hadid’s Legacy Roof, we were shocked by the fluidity the 160 m long and 3,000 ton roof could convey. Its dynamic curvaceous form is definitely a feat of engineering. The judges noted the project’s successful use of steel commenting that the roof ”has overcome severe program and constructional problems. A necessarily complex structure delivers the form and shape at the heart of what will become the emblematic and beautiful icon of the London 2012 Olympics.”

8 House: BIG win for BIG
BIG has proven in the past to be a source of innovating projects. Their idea is far beyond the superficial: it´s about improving the city, as you can see on this presentation by Bjarke Ingels for 8 House.
For this project -which will open in October-, BIG has been honored by the Scandinavian Green Roof Association as the Best Green Roof in the Scandinavia for its 1.700 m2 sloping green roof at an award ceremony held at 8 House in Oerestad, Copenhagen.

2010 Los Angeles Architecture Awards
A few weeks ago the LA Business Council hosted the 40th version of the LA Architectural Awards.
Selected by a jury of 10 notable design and building professionals, the winning projects cut across a wide range of building types, from commercial office spaces to affordable apartment complexes to sports arenas. The call for entries went out in December 2009 to more than 7,000 industry leaders. From the hundreds of submissions received, the jury selected 31 winning projects in 20 overall categories. All winning projects, except the “Best of LA Architects” award winners, are located within Los Angeles County. “Best of LA Architects” recognizes local architects for projects completed outside of Los Angeles County.
The Grand Prize went to the LAPD Administration Building by AECOM (in a joint venture with Roth Sheppard Associates), and we also find projects recently featured at ArchDaily such as the Hidden House by Standard Architecture, the Cherokee Lofts by Pugh + Scarpa, the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories by John Friedman Alice Kimm Architects or the Cahill Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics by Morphosis.

Philips Livable Cities Award
Philips is looking for individuals, community or non-governmental organizations and businesses who have ideas – ideas for ‘simple solutions’ that will improve people’s health and well-being in a city.
To help translate these ideas into reality, three Award grants totaling €125,000 are on the line. One overall winning idea from any of the three categories outlined below will receive a grant of €75,000, while the two additional ideas will receive grants of €25,000.
The categories are:
- Well-being Outdoors
- Independent Living
- Healthy Lifestyle at Work and Home

Embankments of the River Drava / DELISABATINI Architetti
Bridging the gap between the ancient city and its contemporary expansion plans, DELISABATINI Architetti’s winning proposal for the International Competition: EPK 2012 – Embankment of the River Drava redevelops the riverside of Maribor City by addressing the differneces in the contrasted site. Important interventions of the past century, such as the great bridge and the dam, have distorted the character of the medieval city, whose buildings have lost direct contact with water. As the years progressed, the city’s differing sections, such as the historic town of Lent and the edge of Tabor, have grown too separate. The proposal incorporates a uniform organizational element that responds to the different conditions but also joins the two parts to make a strong whole.

Koolhaas wins Lifetime Achievement Award
Chaired by Paolo Baratta, the Board of the Biennale di Venezia has awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement to Rem Koolhaas. The much deserving architect has produced dozens of thought-provoking and inspirational works that constantly push the limits of the current state of architecture. His strength lies in his buildings’ strong conceptual nature that is carried through to ideas about circulation, structure and programmatic organization. ”Rem Koolhaas has expanded the possibilities of architecture. He has focused on the exchanges between people in space. He creates buildings that bring people together and in this way forms ambitious goals for architecture. His influence on the world has come well beyond architecture. People from very diverse fields feel a great freedom from his work,” explained the board.

Standard Receives Honors for Hidden House
Standard, a Los Angeles-based architecture and design practice, received an award from the Los Angeles Business Council (LABC), as winner of the Single Family Housing category at the 40th Annual Los Angeles Architectural Awards for the Hidden House project. The modern single family residence was chosen as an example of local architectural innovation for the home’s eco-friendly construction, which involved incorporating an existing two bedroom cottage into a new, larger structure, without marring the natural context of the home’s expansive and rare 7-acre site.
Zaha Hadid named UNESCO Artist for Peace
On June 24, Zaha Hadid was honored as the UNESCO Artist for Peace, an award bestowed upon a person who promotes the values of the organization, specifically by creating the conditions for dialogue among civilizations, cultures and peoples, based upon respect for commonly shared values. “The arts have always bridged cultural, economic and social divides; teaching us that disparate worlds are not mutually exclusive, but rather layered upon each other and profoundly interlinked. I am honored to join the Artists for Peace, furthering UNESCO’s important message and programs,” said Hadid.

Steven Holl Architects Knut Hamsun Center Wins 2010 North Norwegian Architecture Prize
Steven Holl Architects has received the 2010 North Norwegian Architecture Prize for the Knut Hamsun Center in Hamarøy, Norway. The Prize is awarded annually to projects with special reference to, and significance for North Norwegian historical, cultural, economic and physical conditions.
Having opened its doors to the public on August 4, 2009, on the 150th anniversary of Knut Hamsun’s birth, the Knut Hamsun Center is dedicated to Norway’s most renowned twentieth-century author, and the 1920 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Phyllis Lambert Design Montréal Grant
Helen Fotopulos, Executive Committee Member responsible for Culture, Heritage, Design and the Status of Women, is pleased to announce that the Phyllis Lambert Design Montréal Grant will be awarded for a third consecutive year. Created for young design professionals, this grant aims to acknowledge and promote the talent of emerging Montréal designers and foster their professional recognition.
The winner will receive a $10,000 award to fund a professional development project in one of the cities of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, of which Montréal is a member. A promotional campaign will also be organized to raise awareness of the winner among his or her industry peers as well as the general public.

The European Architecture Prize Nominations
In 010, the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies will inaugurate the first “European Architecture Prize.” The European Architecture Prize is to be given annually to any living architect whose built work exemplifies the highest ideals of European civilization and embodies vision, commitment, and a profound respect for humanity and for the social and physical environment.
Nominations are encouraged from all nations inside the European Union, as well as non EU states. Nominations are invited from architects, writers, critics, academicians, government officials, architectural societies and associations, museums, developers, corporate executives, professionals in the building industry, and the general public at large —and any individual who has an interest in advancing great architecture. The prize is awarded irrespectively of nationality, gender, race, creed, or ideology.
Candidates for the Prize are drawn from the professions of architecture,landscape architecture or urban planning who have profoundly impacted or influenced contemporary architecture philosophy and design ideas today. World of Color Awards
The 2010 World of Color AwardsSM – Inspired by Vanceva is a global recognition program created to honor innovation and inspire the use of color in the built environment. Architects, interior designers, glass fabricators, glazing engineers and other industry professionals will be recognized for their awe-inspiring architectural design projects that demonstrate creativity and forward-thinking uses of colored glass made with the Vanceva color interlayer system.

RIBA takes the Stirling Prize to the BBC
The RIBA has announced that this year’s Stirling Prize will be shown on BBC Two’s The Culture Show, after viewing figures dipped to an all time low on Channel 4 last year.
The awards ceremony will continue to be hosted by Kevin McCloud but will be shown in an earlier slot, airing from 6.30 pm on Saturday October 2 live from London’s Roundhouse.
Only 500,000 viewers tuned to watch Rogers Stirk Harbour’s Maggies Center win the Stirling Prize live on Channel 4 last October, falling from 1.2 million in 2004.
The show was broadcast between 8pm-9pm and the RIBA blamed the low viewing figures on a clash with the X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing. But the figures prompted calls from the architectural community to rethink the format of the show, which has been broadcast on national television for ten years.
RIBA president Ruth Reed described the new union between the RIBA and the BBC as “fantastic”. Mark Bell, the BBC’s commissioning editor for art, said: “As part of the BBC’s commitment to the arts we’re delighted to be shining the light on the very best in British architecture. The Culture Show, which reflects the best of the cultural landscape, is the perfect vehicle for delivering a strong live programme about architecture.”

The Emirates Glass LEAF Awards
This year’s Emirates Glass LEAF Awards entry categories have been announced. This prestigious event, once again sponsored by Emirates Glass, will take place on 10 September 2010. Following the success of last year’s event which took place in Berlin, the 2010 LEAF Awards, now in their seventh year, move to London, where it will attract entries from around the world.
The awards are open to individuals and organisations that have made an outstanding contribution to the world of architecture. Previous winners have included Woods Bagot, Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects, Zaha Hadid, David Chipperfield, SOM, Steven Holl and Terry Farrell. Cooper-Hewitt National Design Awards winners announced
The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum will celebrate outstanding achievement in design this fall with its 11th annual National Design Awards program. Yesterday, Cooper-Hewitt Director Bill Moggridge announced the winners and finalists of the 2010 National Design Awards, which recognize excellence across a variety of disciplines. The Award recipients will be honored at a gala dinner Thursday, Oct. 14, at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York. First Lady Michelle Obama serves as the Honorary Patron for this year’s National Design Awards.

The annual BSA honor awards program invites submissions of projects of any type anywhere in the world designed by Massachusetts architects and also invites architects throughout the world to submit projects built in Massachusetts. 100 Most Creative People / Fast Company
Fast Company just announced this year’s 100 Most Creative People. The list includes a variety of professions and the selection is proof “that creativity is alive and well in 2010.” While the most creative person was deemed Miss Lady Gaga, followed by Eddy Cue (the VP of Apple Internet Services), we were excited to find not one, but three architects making the cut. The 19th spot was awarded to Jean Nouvel, particularly for his take on the Louvre’s Abu Dhabi and his design for the Philharmonie de Paris. The 64th spot went to Bjarke Ingles for his fresh designs. And, our last architect, Kazuyo Sejima rounded in at 88th, for her contextual and minimalistic approach to creating a holistic environment.

RIBA 2010 Award winners
The Royal Institute of British Architects just announced 102 buildings that were awarded for the 2010 Awards. These buildings, 93 sprawled across the UK and 9 in the rest of the EU, include 6 which were nominated for the Stirling Prize.
