ASTOC Architects wins first prize for Senftenberg Harbor competition

ASTOC Architects & Planners have won first prize in the international competition for the new harbor and pier in Senftenberg, . The purpose of the competition was to design the new harbour on the basis of an urban study.

The integration of the lake into the 70 square kilometers of navigable interconnection will further develop the tourist infrastructure of the region “Lausitzer Seenland”.

The new pier plays an important role as a new landmark for the region. The project consists of port facilities as well as a restaurant with meeting rooms overlooking the harbor.

Arons en Gelauff architects wins design competition: Annie MG Schmidt House

Today city planning councilman Maarten van Poelgeest announced the winner of the adaptive reuse design competition for the two former sewage treatment silos in ’s Zeeburg district: the Annie MG Schmidt House. Annie MG Schmidt (1911-1995) is Holland’s most famous author of childrens books.

The winning plan is a mutifunctional cultural center, housing a wide range of diverse activities, including a spectacular open rooftop playground on one silo, and restaurant Praq op ‘t daq built on the rooftop of the other. The doors to the exhibition spaces and media center, movie theater and theater hall, tower room and shops, as well as those of the restaurant, are open seven days a week the whole year through, welcoming visitors and locals alike. The project breathes new life into the silos, transforming them into an inspiring and lively place which will help shape the character of the new Zeeburgereiland housing district.

The plan is the result of the inspired cooperation between the development companies AM and De Alliantie, the Annie MG Schmidt Huis foundation, restaurant Praq, Arons en Gelauff architects, landscape architect Rob Aben, and Janneke Hooymans (This is Jane-interior design).

The Annie MG Schmidt House is expected to be completed in 2011.

Austrian Pavillion for Shanghai Expo 2010 / SPAN and Zeytinoglu Architects

We’ve already featured the designs for the UAE Pavillion, Mexico Pavillion and Denmark Pavillion, for the Shanghai Expo 2010. Today, it’s time for the Austrian Pavillion. The competition for the design was won by Vienna based firms SPAN and Zeytinoglu Architects.

Mexico Pavillion / Shangai 2010

First PlaceLast week, ProMéxico announced the winning projects for the national competition to design the Pavillion in Shangai 2010.

First place was given to , Mónica Orozco, Moritz Melchert, Juan Carlos Vidal, Israel Álvarez, Mariana Tello, and Édgar Ramírez, from Mexico City.

Second place was given to the proposal by Salvador Macías, Alejandro Guerrero, Margarita Peredo, Iván Orozco, Christian Delgado, and Alejandro Arias from Guadalajara.

And third place to the proposal by Juan Carlos Seijo, Xavier Abreu, and Alejandra Abreu, from Mérida.

Xi’an Horticulture Expo proposal by Serie Architects

We’ve recently featured the winning project of the Xi’an World Horticulture Expo by Plasmastudio. Here’s the proposal by Serie Architects that received the second place with their Xi’an Horticulture Expo Masterplan.

Like the Xian City Wall, this new structure, named the ‘Five Climates Crossing’ will mark the centre of the park and simultaneously act as a connector, linking the entrance square on the north, Chang’an Park in the middle and the viewing tower on the south. within the crossing, the green house is arranged linearly as five different episodes of climates zones, allowing visitors to move sequentially from one green house to another whilst maintaining visual connection to the outside.

National Wildflower Centre International Competition won by Ian Simpson Architects

Ian Simpson Architects with Adams Kara Taylor Engineers and Hoare Lea Engineers has been announced as winners of the competition to design a new innovative, architecturally striking educational, conference and seed production complex at the National Wildflower Centre in Knowsley, part of the Liverpool City Region which is intended to be one of the first buildings in the country to be rated BREEAM “Outstanding”.

Munch Museum and Deichman Library in Oslo competition results

Bjørvika, a harbour in the eastern part of , Norway, has become a hot spot for architectural innovation. We have the brand new Oslo Opera by SNOHETTA and the recent competition for the Oslo Central Station awarded to Space Group.

And a recent planning/design competition -actually 2 competitions- just added two cultural buildings to the harbour: the Munch-Area, which will have the new Munch-museum with a collection of the Stenersenmuseum, and the Deichman axis withav the Deichman Library.

Both competitions included invited practices and a stage on which practices applied for pre-qualification.

Valparaiso Cultural Center competition results

1st Prize - Jonathan Holmes, Martin Labbé, Carolina Portugueis, Osvaldo Spichiger

The winners of the Valparaiso Cultural Center competition in were just announced. The competition came after a proposal from brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer was rejected. The Cultural Center will be built where the former prison stood for the last 150 years.

The winning projects are:

2nd Prize – Patricio Mardones, Juan Francisco Garcés, Felipe Ortiz, Pablo Ropert, Rocío Costa

International Competition results for the Urban Development in Split, Croatia

3rd Prize, 3LHDEnd of October 2008, the City of Split launched an Open International Competition for the Urban Development of the Duilovo coastal area in Split (). Submissions were due mid of February 2009. The competition has been organized with the support of the Split’s Architects Association (DAS).

The jury issued the following unanimous decision: 1st and 2nd prize will not be given, but three equal 3rd Prizes + 6 Purchase Prizes. Considering the complexity of the intervention, the jury proposed a workshop for all three awarded teams to attend and work together on the further development of the project.

Designing the 21st century street

In June 2008, Transportation Alternatives launched the competition 21st Century Street. Partecipants to the competition should redesign the intersection between 9th Street and 4th Avenue in Brooklyn, in order to allow more space for pedestrians, cyclists and public transports.

Second prize in a bridge competition in Gothenburg, Sweden, by visiondivision

Swedish architects visiondivision won the second prize on a bridge competition in a couple of years ago with their Bird Bridge. A bit old, yet cool (if someone knows who won the first prize, please let us know).

The site is located in a beautiful untouched forest with old leaf trees in a small rift with a stream at the bottom. This patch of forest lies between The Botanical Gardens and Sahlgrenska, the major hospital in Gothenburg. The bridge would appear as a white hovering line made in plexiglass that slightly reflects the beautiful landscape, which is carried by the tree pillars that disappears in the surrounding nature.

Delft University of Technology competition winners announced

On 13 May 2008, the Faculty of Architecture of the (TU Delft) was unexpectedly reduced to ashes by a devastating fire. Soon after the fire, the Faculty of Architecture decided to organise an open international ideas competition for the new faculty building in 2009. Recently, the winners of the competition where announced. You can see all the winning projects, here.

2009 AIA San Francisco Design Awards Winners

The American Institute of Architects, San Francisco chapter ( San Francisco) announces the winners of the 2009 AIA San Francisco Design Awards program.

At the gala, winners were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the built environment in the categories of Architecture and Interior Architecture, Energy + Sustainability, Integrated Practice, Young Architects and Associates, Unbuilt Design, and Urban Design in the Bay Area. Each of these award categories was divided into three subcategories-Honor, Merit, and Citation. In addition, awards for Special Achievement were also presented.

Cie architects to design the Tianjin Urban Planning Museum

Dutch firm Cie Architects recently received first prize in the competition to design the Tianjin Urban Planning Museum, .

The building is composed of 3 distinct sections: Urban planning museum and offices, new year’s painting gallery and studios, and a conference centre totaling 29,000 sqm including parking.

drdharchitects wins library and concert hall competition in Norway

drdharchitects has won first place in the international competition to design a new library and concert hall in Bodø, .

The Bodø Kulturhus and Library will consist of two public buildings; a new city library (5,500m²) and a three-auditorium concert hall (7,350m²), creating a new cultural centre for the Norwegian coastal city.

The results of the competition were announced in Bodø, Norway on 27 February. beat five other practices to win the invited competition, including CF Moller, Medplan, General Architecture, Langdon Reis Zahn and Lundgaard & Tranberg.

A-Lab wins competition with Eco-Office design

The green folks at Inhabitat sent us this interesting project. This stunning energy-efficient office recently won a competition to design the 2012 location for Norway’s oil company StatoilHydro. Conceived by Oslo’s A-Lab, the modern and flexible office compound took the winning bid from a pool of some 40 entries. The new site and office center brings together two previously separated buildings, opening up more efficient communication and reducing the need for cross-town travel and courier services. Five separate wings lie on top of each other in the shape of a star, keeping particular offices regionalized while still attached.
