Trail House / Anne Holtrop

Anne Holtrop’s follows a series of trails in the ground that were created by the daily circulation of pedestrians. The house becomes the path and transforms the inside into a “walking home.”   As the house branches along the series of paths, it becomes narrower and then wider to provide ever-changing views of the site.  In this way, Holtrop makes a specific link with the environment by showing the house as a product of the site.

Le Temps des Environment / Nicolas Dorval Bory Architect

Nicolas Dorval Bory Architect designed an extension artist residency for the International Art & Landscape Center on the island of Vassivière.  Situated in the middle of an artificial hydro-electric lake, the project explores the concept of  ”de-spatialization” and “blurred architecture” by breaking the building components down into fragments, lines and dots.  The building gradually begins to dissolve allowing “its temporal dimension to be experienced as its geometrical dimensions disappear into architecture and landscape.”   The team studied time progression to invent a new kind of space and organization based on their conceptual ideas.

Built to Wear / Ball Nogues Studio

A new installation by Ball Nogues Studio for the 2009 Biennale of Urbanism, in collaboration with American Apparel.

Curator: Beatrice Galilee

Temporary spatial installations within urban cultures are a rapidly evolving phenomenon. Unlike “permanent” buildings, these structures nimbly respond to the accelerated temporality of cities on the move like Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Increasingly they provide the urban spectacles that “signature” buildings aim to deliver. Like never before, cities are adorned with provisional environments and architecturally scaled events. This situation has been further emboldened by the financial meltdown in 2008 as investors look to spend money on big urban spectacles without the financial commitment of making buildings. Within this economic outlook, the disposable plates of architecture are better investments than a collection of fine tableware. However, an important question looms when cleaning up after the meal: can the plate be composted or should it be colored with crayon and reused as a party decoration?

Monster Footprints / MAD

image008

MAD Architects’ latest contribution to came in the form of two huge .  The design, made for the Urbanism\Architecture Shenzhen & Hongkong Bi-city Biennale, is a sunken space that functions as a playground.  Paved in pink EPDM material, the Monster’s Footprint attempts to enter a very “surreal reality”, and offer a possibility for city dwellers to find their own freedom and joy in the Citizen Square.  The playful space illustrates MAD ‘s ability to bring their design attitude to smaller scale projects.

CO2 Cube / Bonanno + Cornubert

dzn_co2_still_cube

As the trend of “going green” takes over society, concerns about carbon emission is constantly growing, making both architects and those not in the profession aware of the implications of their actions.  With their new , Alfio Bonanno and Christophe Cornubert have made a 27 foot cube of an actual ton of CO2.  Dubbed the “CO2 Cube”, the piece is a representation of the amount of carbon dioxide emitted each month by the average person in an industrialized country, or in the case of the United States, every two weeks.  The piece  will create a strong visual impact on those passing by the Saint Jørgen Lake in front of the Copenhagen Planetarium.

Architectural Fashion: Frank Gehry for Lady Gaga

This morning I was watching MTV and there was a video for Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi”. Even if you like or don´t her music, the aesthetic/art direction of the video was incredible. After that I went went to my computer to Google more info about the video, and found a tweet by @tomatoejane, one of our readers, pointing to an article on Curbed NY: Designs Hat For Lady Gaga.

The result? You can see it on the above photo. Personally, I didn´t like it. Before seeing the photos of the hat I thought Gehry would come up with something totally different…

What do you think?

Mary Mattingly

The Waterpod ProjectTM has been floating around the area for the past few months gaining a lot of attention.  Beginning in Newtown Creek, between Brooklyn and Queens, the Pod is moving down the East River and Hudson River.  As reported by Melena Ryzik for The New York Times (view her articles here) this experimental project investigates the blend of community living and artistry. Showcasing artworks, performances and such, the WaterpodTM, is an eco-conscious environment that was designed “In preparation for our coming world with an increase in population, a decrease in usable land, and a greater flux in environmental conditions, people will need to rely closely on immediate communities and look for alternative living models; the Waterpod is about cooperation, collaboration, augmentation, and metamorphosis,” explained Mary Mattingly, a photographer who thought of the Waterpod idea.

Art Museum / KSP Engel und Zimmermann Architekten

overview1

KSP Engel und Zimmermann Architekten has shared their winning proposal for the new Art Museum for Nanjing, .  The museum lies near the cultural axis which is comprised of Changjiang Road to the south and the “revolution road”, Zhongshan East Road, to the north.   These roads are slightly angled toward one another creating a “trapeze-shaped plot of land”.    This distinct site inspired the team to respond  to its critical surroundings.   Components in the museum such as the Revolution Cube and the Culture Cube, are strategically placed to honor the project’s location.

Prada Transformer, Position 2: Cinema

© Iwan Baan
© Iwan Baan

’ latest project -The Prada Transformer- is not just a building, but also a statement on today´s state of architecture. Dubbed the anti-blob, this “object” rejects all common blobby shapes we have seen lately. Simple geometrical shapes (a circle, a cross, a rectangle and an hexagon) enclose a space that depending on its rotation results on different spaces suitable for exhibitions, cinema, art exhibitions and other special events. Each face is the platform on which these activities take place, while also being served by the other faces enclosing the space.

A few weeks ago, we presented the Transformer at Position 1 (Fashion Exhibition) with photos by Iwan Baan . Now, he sent us his photo set for the Transformer at Position 2: Cinema.

From June 26th to July 5th, the Transformer used a center piece on one of the faces to project “Flesh, Mind and Soul”, a film festival co-curated by Alejandro González Iñárritu (director Babel, 21 Grams). Please note that the interiors are now almost all black.

As of now, the Transformer is going through some changes to debut on its new position on Jul 30th to host “Beyond Control”, an exhibition by the Prada Foundation.

Little Temple project at University of Technology Eindhoven

portada4Eight students at the University of Technology in Eindhoven have built their own design of a little temple at full scale. These buildings were realized in a space that’s part of the office of Kovos Architects, with materials donated by different sponsors. The main source of inspiration during the design process was the abbey of in the Provence, France.

Aspects like light, space, mass, rhythm and proportion find their most essential form in this great example of architectonic simplicity. After a visit to the abbey the students searched for an interpretation of these aspects within their own design of a little temple. With the full scale execution of the design, the spatial effect of the detail was most important.

The project is by Jan Schevers. The participating students are Yuri Buteijn, Joan Gaudin, Faye Hermens, Dirk Reijnders, Dave Venmans, Raoul Vleugels, Johanna van Warners en Frank Wijnen. For more informations about the project and visits to the exhibition, check out the projects website: www.littletemple.nl

Covered in Umbrellas / U. de Talca

The initial[1] idea was thought provoking: construct a covering using 400 red umbrellas (outside of their intended purpose) suspended over the new pedestrian mall in the city of Talca to create a visual impression of the inhabitants of a city in which it is uncommon to see daring displays in public spaces.

This lack of innovation seems to come in part, from others creating similar urban displays based only on previously proved ideas as well as the minute demand for this type of “product” by the local population. This could explain why businesses are reluctant to fund innovative displays or events. Or perhaps, it’s the stunted competitive environment that hinders creativity.

Pool Noodle Rooftop / Jeffrey Inaba

X‐Initiative presents the premiere of Pool Noodle  by Jeffrey Inaba’s Los Angeles‐based practice, INABA. The rooftop space, which will be used for film screenings and special events, will be open to the public daily during selected visiting hours throughout the summer. Four separate seating areas cluster around a ‘X’ shaped carpet that covers the entire rooftop surface.

The furniture, which is also X‐shaped in plan, has been constructed from pool noodles - the long and cylindrical, foam water flotation toys. The pool noodles have been cut and bunched vertically into chaise lounge and ottoman units of varying heights that accommodate up to 150 people. When viewed from above, the arrangement of buoyant seating material spells out the word, ‘bububluooopppp’ - the sound of something either rising or sinking.
