Treehouses in Paradise Competition Entries

Courtesy of Gensler

Last year, we were reached by the organizers of the Treehouses in Paradise Competition in order to help them spread the word. A couple of days later, we realized the competition was in fact a scam, so we took the call for proposals down, and published this statement.

Unfortunately, we weren’t the only ones tricked, as several architects payed the fee to enter the competition and worked hard to prepare their proposals, only to realize they had lost their money, time, and work.

We decided to reach out to those who prepared their entries to help them realize that maybe all their work wasn’t in fact, for nothing. So we’re giving you, our readers, the opportunity to help your own colleagues. After the break you’ll find all the proposals we received. We encourage you to share your thoughts through the comments. Which one do you like the most? What would you improve (with respect please)?

Science and technology evolve at an astounding rate. They are in constant motion and change, with such fierce speed that both surprises and excites. The non-stop evolution is boundless, and it gets faster and more dynamic every day.

Companies, industries, laboratories and research centers devote energy and make investments to discover new ways to enhance and consolidate a variety of products in general. The spaces that showcase scientific and technological progress have become hubs of social interest, where magic and fantasy of the near yet unknown future attract like a magnet that boasts an amazing array of features.

In mankind and nature, science and technology have uncovered a universe of solutions and answers that not only shapes a better future but also brings all the bits and pieces together. Nature serves as the middleman between mankind and science; there lie its strength and bright future. The virtual world has taken on paramount importance and plays the leading role in today’s stage.

LA Architecture School Boasts Stimulating Post-professional Programs

© ESTm, Marcelo Spina Studio, Artificial Clouds

Two dynamic post-graduate programs offered by the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in Los Angeles have been charged with examining core contemporary issues facing architecture today. Spanning topics from advanced manufacturing methodologies and new building systems, to urban planning and design challenges faced globally, these post-professional tracks allow students to rethink architecture and design through the creative lens of the SCI-Arc community.

The architecture school’s Emerging Systems, Technologies & Media (ESTm) and Future Initiatives (SCIFI) programs are conceived as intensive one-year (three semesters) post-professional degrees in architecture, functioning as think tanks and research engines within the larger framework of the school.

Arquine Conference nº14: Space

Courtesy of Arquine

Architects could never explain space. When we think about space, we have only looked at its containers. As if space itself is invisible.
Rem Koolhaas

History has granted architecture the role of dividing up space. It manifests itself in providing lodging and orienting humankind, who inhabits this fragmented whole we call space and which is interwoven with time at a tacit and essential level.

We live in space, in these spaces, in these cities, in these fields, in these corridors, in these gardens. It is plain to see. And yet, it is not possible to quantify space or give shape to it: it is extension and connection, fact and certainty through time and movement. Space may be travelled through and narrated, experienced and actuated. Space contains and is contained, situates and signifies.

Arquine raises the question “what do we talk when we talk about space?” in order to explore the different meanings it conveys. The conference presents multi-disciplinary perspectives to redeem the value of each of these and thereby reveal the “Species of Spaces”.

The Arquine Conference Nº14 will gather important architects throughout the world discussing these matters. David Chipperfield, Atelier Bow Wow, Delugan Meissl, and Denise Scott Brown will be part of one of the most important architecture events in Latin America, taking part from March 11 to March 12 in the Teatro Metropólitan at , Mexico.

The problem isn’t so much to find out how we have reached this point, but simply to recognize that we have reached it, that we are here. There isn’t one space, a beautiful space round about, a beautiful space all around us, there’s a whole lot of small bits of space…
George Perec
