AD Classics: Mazar-e-Quaid (National Mausoleum) / Yahya Merchant

Otherwise known as the National Mausoleum, the Mazar-e-Quaid is the tomb of the founder of , Muhammad Ali Jinnah.  Sited in the center of , on a natural plateau, this marble structure was designed by the Indian architect Yahya Merchant and was completed in 1970.

Formerly known as the Nippon Convention Center, the Makuhari Messe (derived from the German word meaning “trade fair”) is the second largest convention center in Japan behind only Big Sight.  Makuhari Messe was designed by famous Japanese architect and was completed in 1989 with the intention of establishing the area of Makuhari as an architectural destination separate from Tokyo proper.

AD Classics: Lotus Temple / Fariborz Sahba

Popularly known as the Lotus Temple, the Bahá’í House of Worship in New Delhi,  is a house of worship that was designed by Iranian architect Fariborz Sahba and completed in 1986.  The temple is one of eight Bahá’í House of Worship facilities in the world and has welcomed over 70 million visitors since its completion, making it one of the most frequented architectural landmarks in the world.  From a denominational standpoint, the Lotus temple is open to all practitioners regardless of religious affiliation and functions more as a gathering place of worship to interested visitors.

China Diamond Exchange Center / Goettsch Partners

The China Diamond Exchange Center is a 535,500 square foot office complex designed by of Chicago, Illinois.  Located within Shanghai’s sea of massive and often overstated high-rises, this modest-by-comparison structure is brilliantly detailed, appropriately scaled, and aesthetically beautiful.  The complex was completed in 2009 with the help of associate architects Zhong-fu Architects.  The Diamond Exchange Center is sited within Shanghai’s Pudong district, an international financial and commercial hub and houses both the Exchange and additional relative tenants.

The OS House by Johnsen Schmaling Architects is located in downtown Racine, Wisconsin and attempts to redefine the urban fabric of this historic rustbelt city.  Sited on a narrow lot between a 3-story mansion and a mid-century ranch, the colorful 1,900sf residence is a welcome and dynamic intervention to the streetscape.
