Trimo Urban Crash 2011: Opening of the Winning Life Stand
On June 23, 2001, in the residential neighborhood of Fužine in Slovenia, Ljubljana, Trimo officially handed over a public architectural installation “Life Stand” – the winning project of the Trimo Urban Crash competition for students of architecture and design which was created by Polish students, Wojciech Nowak from an architectural faculty in Gliwice, and Martynika Bielawska, from an art and design academy in Wroclaw.
“Life Stand” is the result of the Trimo Urban Crash competition, which encourages a creative transformation of the urban environment with the help of advanced building materials and technologies. The creative workshop was held by Professor Cyril Shing from the Chelsea College of Art and Design, University of Arts, London who also served as the mentor for the finalists. The event was opened by the General Manager of Trimo, Tatjana Fink, and the Deputy Mayor of Ljubljana prof. Janez Koželj.

The new office building of The Korea Teachers Pension Head Office was established to bring the unification of three bodies for the stability and efficiency of educational pursuits: Teachers, The Korean Teachers Pension Head Office and the country. Envisioning Urban Futures: Winning Machelen-Diegem Masterplan / Maxwan Architects + Urbanists
Maxwan Architects + Urbanists shared with ArchDaily their winning proposal for the Machelen-Diegem masterplan. This urban area is located in Brussels, Belgium and is filled with historic value. The site, located between the arteries of the capital of Europe (surrounded by airport, road and rail infrastructure), in the vicinity of strategic economic development, near a large city, yet affordable living in a green environment, Machelen and Diegem is a very interesting area. The nature of the site poses a variety of challenges for the designers.

The Cube / Orange Architects
Orange Architects, a partnership between Dutch architecture firms JSA, CIMKA and HofmanDujardin, shared with us their design of a luxury apartment block on Plot 941 in Sin el Fil, an eastern district of Beirut. The design was commissioned by the Lebanese development corporation Masharii. The 50-metre-tall block will contain 19 apartments ranging in size from 90 to 180 m2.

Green Building / Forward
The project presented here – Green Building: Madan Technology Center – was planned by the Forward architectural firm following a commission by the Association of the Almada / Setúbal Science and Technology Park – Madan Parque. The site is located in Portugal, on a site near the Faculty of Sciences and Technology – Nova University and is designed to host the Company Innovation program and a Data Centre serving the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region. Given its characteristics, the infrastructure shall serve as a pole of attraction for high technology companies in the context of an architectural proposal that is moving towards innovative solutions to the environmental issues of today.

International Design Firms Invited to Enter Competition for New St. Petersburg Pier
The prominent waterfront of St. Petersburg, Florida, active since the late 19th century, will be host to an international design competition to replace the current landmark pier with a new, iconic pier structure. Interested parties must register for the competition by July 8, 2011. Submission of the Statement of Qualifications will be due on July 19, 2011.
Design teams interested in obtaining information on the city’s request for qualifications must visit the Competition website.
Kiev Edge Competition Proposal / Bablowsky & Wlasenko Architects, Roman Pomazan and Peter Vlasenko
This competition entry for the redevelopment of the Kiev Edge Park’s infrastructure was submitted by architects Bablowsky & Wlasenko Architects, Roman Pomazan and Peter Vlasenko. The main goal of this project was to define strategic lines of the Kiev Edge’s development for short- and a long-term performance. It’s mission was to redefine and create a new connections between and inside the Edge along Kiev, Ukraine prominent River Dnepr.

Wanderlust Hotel / Asylum, phunk Studio, fFurious and DP Architects
The Wanderlust Hotel in Little India, Singapore features a collaboration of designers from Singapore studios including Asylum, phunk Studio and fFurious - together with architect firm DP Architects. Each level is dedicated to the designs of each firm. The Lobby is themed as Industrial Glam by Asylum – a juxtaposition of the surrounding’s setting and contemporary design. Level 2 is Eccentricity by phunk Studio and is designed with bright colors and neon lights on all the surfaces, including a rainbow corridor and mosaic tiled jacuzzi. Level 3 is Is it just Black and White by DP Architects which feature contrasting black and white painted spaces with origami and Pop-Art works on display. Level 4 is Creature Comforts by fFurious where friendly monsters keep guests company in their rooms.

Serlachius Museum Gösta Extension Competition Proposal / Office Jarrik Ouburg
Since 1945 the residential palace of Gösta Serlachius in the Joenniemi Manor area in Männtä, Finland has been home to the Gösta Serlachius Art Collection, one of the Nordic countries’ most significant private collections. This proposal for the extension of Serlachius Museum by the Office Jarrik Ouburg will expand the capacity of the museum by five times, creating an ensemble of buildings that enhance the quality of the natural landscape.

Architects in Mission Architecture Competition: “Post- Industry Age, Green Transformation”
This year the Architects In Mission (AIM) competition committee is hosting its annual competition for architecture students and young professionals to demonstrate their design skills and abilities. The topic this year is “Post-Industry Age, Green Transformation” where participants will be asked to redesign a Beijing steel factory, the biggest in China.
The site is a part of the Central Business District of China and is heavily influenced by the rapid urbanization. Green Transformation aims to make use of the land resource, spatial quality and other conditions of the old industrial zones, and transform the previous heavy industrial production to new industries with low-pollution and low-energy consumption. It is geared toward the rehabilitation of brownfields, and creating diverse cultural spaces within the developing cities.

Taiwan Tower International Competition
The Taiwan Tower International Competition is part of a larger urban plan in Taichung, Taiwan as a part of a new development for the “Gateway City.” Taiwan Tower is to be located at the southern tip of the Central Park where visitors will have a panoramic view of the park, the city and the natural surroundings. The building is to have a minimum height of 300-meters with recreational functions such as an information center, shops, food and beverage services, observatories and an environmental monitoring station as part of an effort to create a model green building.
Regeneration of the Favela de Rocinha Slum / Jan Kudlicka
The research presented here was conducted by Jan Kudlicka, who spent the last year studying slum dwellings, known as “favelas,” in Brazil. The breadth of the research delves into the living conditions that these urban and suburban developments create and the feasible ways in which their problems can be addressed through the regeneration of the spaces. Jan Kudlicka studied the “little farm” of Rocinha in Rio de Janeiro, which is one of the largest slums in the city.

Pazhou Masterplan / Goettsch Partners
A master plan by Goettsch Partners (GP) has been selected as the winning scheme in the design competition for a prominent site in the new Pazhou district in Guangzhou, China. The Pazhou Masterplan will consist of three urban parcels that form a triangular site, which is planned for seven buildings totaling 428,000 square meters. The client and developer is Poly Real Estate (Group) Co., Ltd., China’s leading state-owned real estate company.

Attempt 01: Space Specific Installations / Lijo Jos and Reny Lijo
Lijo Jos and Reny Lijo recently displayed their exhibition of “Space Specific Installations” in the Kerla Lalithakala Akademi Art Gallery of Kerala, India. The architects filled the gallery with figures that intruded upon the space occupied by visitors and forced interactions between the work and the users of the space using a wide range of materials. Sustainable Vertical Neighborhood / Solus4
This project comes from architectural and urban planning firm, solus4 who has devised a set of principles that guided the design of the Sustainable Vertical Neighborhood. This “neighborhood” takes its form in an iconic 950 foot tall residential tower in New York City. Applying these principles to a vertical neighborhood requires the full engagement of the design team, the building team, the financing team and the owners.

International Design Ideas Competition for Liantang – Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point Passenger Terminal Building / A.Lo Design
This submission for the Internation Design Ideas Competition for Liantang was designed by A.Lo Design for Hong Kong, China on a site bridged between the urban fabric of Liantang and the natural site of Heung Yuen Wai. Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point Passenger Terminal Building sits within the boundary and balancing point between city and nature. The design philosophy of the project is to redefine the nature of infrastructural facilities that embrace nature rather than destroying and replacing it.

Wangfujing Mixed-Use Center / Latitude Studio with BIAD
The Wangfujing Center in Beijing, China is a mixed-use space designed by Latitude Studio. The intention of the proposal is to design an architectural solution that provides a container for an endless possibility of experiences. To achieve this, Latitude Studio considered the role of the atrium in Roman architecture, which injects the space with light and air.
