The Taiwan Conceptual Tower International Competition awarded “The Tower of Droplets” Sir Peter Cook and Gavin Robotham’s London-based Cook Robotham Architecture Bureau (CRAB) won second prize for their entry: “The Tower of Droplets in The Taiwan Conceptual Tower International Competition. Presented here is just one of the 237 entries from 25 countries that were submitted. Crab studio recieved a $65,000 award for their entry for Taichung, Taiwan. The team comprised Jenna Al-Ali, Nuria Blanco, Lorene Faure, and Selma Johannson. Consulting engineer was Michael Kaverne of Buro Happold.
A-lab of Oslo, Norway and SEA of Copenhagen, Denmark) have collaborated for the winning design proposal in a competition for a new urban development on Skien Brygge, Norway. The former harbor area, which occupies four hectare, is the site of a new urban community. The site is defined by the water’s edge on the west and a steeply rising landscape on the east.
Parson’s New School of Design and the Dean’s Office present The Design and Existential Risk Lecture Series. The event will take place at the Kellen Auditorium at 66 Fifth Avenue at 13th Street in New York City, 6pm – 8pm. The lecture is open to the public, but be adviced that seating is limited. Annie Kown and Adriana Young of The New School GPIA, Crisis Networks along with Michael Chen and Jason Lee of Pratt School of Architecture, Crisis Fronts are scheduled to speak with Mathan Ratinam, who is Assistant Professors at Parsons SDS and Coordinator of the Humanitarian Design Platform.
Olson Kundig Architects will be breaking ground this year for the construction of the Gethsemane Lutherane Church in Seatle. The $20 million project includes the remodeling of the church’s main sanctuary, design of a garden, chapel and a new parish life center that includes offices, a library, fellowship hall, kitchen and social services. Above the parish life center, a five-story, fifty-unit complex of affordable housing, designed by SMR Architects, will provide the final addition to the Church.

Influx_Studio has taken on the task of designing a cultural and ecological visit for the Koahsiung Marine Culture and Pop Music Center as a measure to critically enhance and hybridize the urban fabric in Kaohsiung, Taiwan in response to the global infrastructures of a growing global economy. The proposal, titled The Vortex, is projected to become a powerful icon for the city, and embody a refreshing sustainable identity for the Kaohsiung.
Segovia, Spain’s School of Architecture at IE University has launched the world’s first Master’s Degree Program that combines advanced design with business management. Influential professionals in the field of architecture met at the Building Center in Central London, where Javier Quintana, Dean of the School of Architecture at IE University, introduced the program.
Contrast Designs presents their development for the competition of the rehabilitation of “Sednaoui Al Khazendar,” a building in the midst of two historic periods of Cairo’s history. It stands as a relic of Egypt’s history, below which the bustle of everyday life, of car traffic and street vendors, fills the space.

“House of Families” is a project for the Greenland Self Government and Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq to provide housing for disadvantaged young women with children in Nuuk, Greenland. The architects, Fantastic Norway, who designed the building are part of a larger group led by Dahl & Uhre architects and TNT Nuuk architects and including MDH arkitekter, 42 architects + Regional associates, M: ARC and Arkitekti Helena Lennert in the development of Nuuk.
The existing 40’ x 60’ footprint of the pavilion on the Atlantic City Boardwalk has been re-envisioned by Hung-Yin Yen, DESA, and Ching-Yi Chen in an attempt to maximize the usage of the space as a Holocaust Memorial and activate it as a gathering point on the boardwalk.
Of a total of 410 projects, five have been selected for the 2010 Aga Khan Award for Architecture at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha. The five projects, selected by a Master Jury are:
Gonatas+Lantavos Architects designed the Social Housing Project for the competition sponsored by the Greek Social Housing Organisation and the Hellenic Institute of Architecture. Located in Axios, a municipality 27 km from the center of Thessalonica in Northern Greece, the residential complex is composed of small buildings that make up the larger complex. The existing landscape and context of the site helped formulate the design approach as an electronic microcircuit of connections.

Burke Culligan Deegan’s design for the Aoibhneas Children’s Centre won the international competition administered by by the RIAI (Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland). The new children’s centre is an addition to the existing women’s refuge in Dublin, Ireland. The philosophy of the design was to aid growth and recovery in an uplifting environment for women and children who were temporary residents in the refuge.

Architects GilBartolome ADW won the first prize in the competition Smart Future Minds Award with the project Lighting Device which aimed at anticipating technological and environmental aspects for the future of the city. Jurors selected this project for its viability, its vision for the future and the exclusive use of renewable energies and its potential as a social activator in the urban realm.

ArchDaily has recieved another submission from the Taiwan Tower Competition in Taichung, by Broadway Malayn. The project was dubbed 3x3x3 to represent the conceptual framework of the coalescence of three distinct features of the tower: environmental, social and economic.
The guiding principle behind Schiavello Architects’design for the Starfish Square in Tropea, Calabria, Italy was to create a symbolic focal point for the city that could bring social groups together. The project uses a starfish as the base form for the design.
DSBA, Mihai CARCIUN and upgrade.studio have been declared winners of the Taiwan Tower Conceptual Design Compeition with a design proposal that encompasses the symbolism of Taichung as a city. The team conceptualized a structure for Taichung that would activate the local culture in a design that also stands as a landmark for the city and as a campaign for diligent and responsible design.
