a+u 2017:05 Feature: Emerging Architects in USA

The May 2017 issue of a+u uncovers six teams of emerging architects in USA: Andrew Kovacs, Bureau Spectacular (Jimenez Lai & Joanna Grant), The LADG (Andrew Holder & Claus Benjamin Freyinger), Ellie Abrons, Mark Foster Gage, and Young & Ayata (Michael Young & Kutan Ayata).

Over the past 20 years, the field of architecture in USA experienced waves of changing trends such as digital design, globalization, and social design. Although the new generation architects witnessed these trends first hand as students or entry-level architects, their architecture appears, at a first glance, disconnected to the earlier trends. Furthermore, while their predecessors aimed to establish a unified movement and pursued novelty and authorship, each of the current-generation architects is focused on his/her unique interests and affinities. At the same time, however, they freely form a network with their contemporaries in the same or different fields as needed. Through the works and interviews featured in this issue, we being to see the common thread in their aesthetics.

The emerging architects in USA – the country with a tradition of realizing revolutionary innovations from small, ambitious experiments – are seeking opportunities to build while boldly pushing the boundary of architecture.
