Art as Labour : Build & Design Summer School in Nikola-Lenivets

We invite young architects, artists and students to take part in a Global Practice Unit international summer school, organized this summer at Nikola-Lenivets Art Park in Russia.

World-famous artists and architects will lead the process, inluding Nikolay-Polissky, the founder of the Nikola-Lenivets park, who revived the local rural community through art, and Alexandr Brodsky, painter and architect, as well as teachers from the Umea School of Architecture (Sweden), Limerick School of Architecture (Ireland), Oxford Brooks University (UK), and MARCH (Russia). The summer school will explore how art can generate and support communities and create an architectural intervention in the Park in response to this challenge.

The Global Practice Unit is a unique international multidisciplinary architecture school that gives students the opportunity to pick educational modules from several leading architecture schools around the world and participate in live projects in various "classrooms," Nikola-Lenivets Art Park being one of them.

The summer school is curated by Professor Robert Mull, Founder of the Global Practice Unit, Head of Architecture at the University of Brighton and co-founder of MARCH; and led by Thomas Randall-Page, Head of the Building Works Unit, and Xenia Adjoubei, architect, Head of International Projects at the Moscow Architecture School.

The Art as Labour summer school is located in Nikola-Lenivets, the largest art park in Europe, which offers participants stunning scenery and a rich research test bed, with 28 art works spread across 650 hectares. We will examine the relationship between art and labor in the context of increasing automation and future changes in the notion of "labor," recent movements in Russian art and architecture that make reference to Russia’s rural past to address the loss of communal identity and cohesion. The work of Ilya & Emilia Kabakov, Nikolay Polissky and Alexandr Brodsky will form a central theme.

This summer school is not only a unique opportunity, but also a challenge to create a built work with our own hands. Hone your drawing, design and construction skills while being inspired by global thinkers in architecture and art.

The results of the school will be an architectural intervention in the park, a publication and presentations at an ideas symposium in Nikola-Lenivets and in Moscow. Full details on the symposium follow.
