Canstruction® Exhibit and Design Competition

This year Canstruction® challenged 25 teams of architects and engineers to produce sculptures out of 100,000 full cans of food. The exhibition of the work produced will be displayed at the World Financial Center between November 11th and 22nd. Everyone is welcome, free of charge to marvel at the mind-boggling sculptures.

Canstruction® is an exhibit and design competition geared to raise hunger awareness during Thanksgiving. Teams design their sculptures for 8-12 weeks and are then given one single night to stack them.

Each team meticulously assembles the sculptures based on the color of each can to produce whimsical images from pop-culture and everyday items. Last year’s competition had a variety of entries including a Beatle’s silhouette, Quaker Oats oatmeal and the popular caterpillar from children’s books; mushrooms, a cyclone, a piggy bank, pie and a hand silhouette also presented feats of engineering that at first disguise the use of the cans.

When the sculptures are dismantled, City Harvest will distribute the cans, along with the 28 million pounds collected from all segments of the food industry including restaurants, grocers, corporate cafeterias, manufacturers, and farms. City Harvest feeds 600 community food programs and helps over 300,000 hungry New Yorkers.
