Architecture One Doesn’t Forget

It is no coincidence that steel construction is regarded as a special challenge to designers. Virtually no other material with the same dimensions allows such precision. Immense spans and cantilevers of 30-40 meters, as realized by Santiago Calatrava in Liege, are no problem for this material; and with his station hall, Calatrava demonstrates once more that this can be wholly in keeping with the creation of a light, transparent overall appearance. One might almost overlook the fact that there are some 10.000 tonnes of steel in this structure. (…).”
