"Lina Bo Bardi: Together" Opens at The Graham Foundation

From April 25 through July 25, 2015, the Graham Foundation will host an exhibition at its Madlener House showcasing the vision of Italian-Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi. Known for her emphasis on social modernism and expressive use of materials, Lina Bo Bardi: Together explores her legacy through her collected works, as well as that of other artists paying homage to the architect and striving to generate new conversations about her designs. Curated by Noemi Blager, the exhibition features photographs, films, and artistic objects reflecting Bo Bardi's diverse work and immersion in Brazilian culture.

Kicking off with an opening reception on April 24, Lina Bo Bardi: Together will begin its first presentation in the United States. The exhibition highlights not only the experience of Bo Bardi's work, but also its wide impact, as expressed by the contributing artists. The architect's legacy is celebrated in featured photographs by artist Ioana Marinescu. Additionally, the highlighted works of Madelon Vriesendorp (co-founder of OMA and wife of Rem Koolhaas) are the result of public workshops she hosted at Bo Bardi's Solar do Unhão, a sugar mill converted into a craft museum.

A revealing film by contributing filmmaker, artist, and architect, Tapio Snellman explores the influence of Bo Bardi's cultural center SESC Pompéia by documenting daily life and interactions within the space in São Paulo.

The exhibition features a never-produced design by Bo Bardi - the Bowl Chair - manufactured by the exhibition's main sponsor Arper as a dedication to her work. Proceeds from the limited-edition chairs go to the Bo Bardi Institute with the intent of bringing the exhibition to new venues. Furthermore, Bo Bardi's craft is experienced first-hand through the exhibition itself, designed by London-based Assemble to evoke the style of the iconic architect and connect visitors with her design philosophies.
