Symposium: Model Making In The Digital Age

Symposium: Model Making In The Digital Age

An upcoming conference at the University of Manchester will tackle the idea of Model Making In The Digital Age. Based on the premise that the world of architecture is dominated by digital tools today more than ever, from design and manufacturing to the ways in which we visualise complex spaces and structures physically and virtually, this symposium seeks to shed new light on the practice of model making and its uses.

What role does model making play in the design process at professional practice level? Why does the medium of model making (arguably) play an ever more prominent role in design? This symposium will bring together individuals who have witnessed these changes first hand and offers insight into the advantages and disadvantages they bring in both professional and academic environments.

Speakers will include:

  • Dr Raymond Lucas - Head of Architecture at the University of Manchester, Senior Lecturer at MSA and Researcher at MARC
  • Ed Bartlett - CAD Support Manager at Foster + Partners
  • Gregor Anderson - Head of Rapid Prototyping at Foster + Partners
  • Milena Stavric - Assistant Professor, Graz University of Technology
  • James Smith - Director, Amalgam Modelmakers, Bristol
  • Ken Grix - Architect and Modelmaker, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios
  • Prof. Nick Dunn - Professor of Urban Design, University of Central Lancashire & ImagineLancaster
