Trail House / Anne Holtrop

Anne Holtrop’s follows a series of trails in the ground that were created by the daily circulation of pedestrians. The house becomes the path and transforms the inside into a “walking home.”   As the house branches along the series of paths, it becomes narrower and then wider to provide ever-changing views of the site.  In this way, Holtrop makes a specific link with the environment by showing the house as a product of the site.

More images and more about the project after the break.

As long as the house is situated on the site, there can be no new, natural walking trails created. The house is seen as “an obstacle, an intruder” where each new path is a result of the house.

“The hiker does not know exactly where the trail ends and the house begins. At what point does the unsuspecting walker experience the presence of the house, at what distance does he feels the discomfort of entering private property?”

It is a very interesting approach. Though some issues like climatic consideration, controls etc. can be questioned, I think the concept is quite impressive. Congratulations!

At what point will the residents grow tired of this “exercise” and dismantle it for firewood?

This is a dumb idea. It is not a real house. It looks more like a long hallway, and it blocks the path for other people to walk on. It seems very selfish to me.

Brandon Pass says:

As an urban “trail haus” I’m not so sure. I was curious and hopeful by the title “trailhouse” since I just got done hiking a portion of the AT (Appalachian Trail) where lean-to bunk houses and shelters are provided for through hikers. This type of edifice would be an oasis to a weary hiker completing a 25mile a day hike. But in an urban context, my guess is that it will be covered in graffiti (not so bad…layering of time) and littered with hypodermic needles, cans, bags and condoms.

I do like it though as an object. Very well done. However, Its the pragmatic issues that will trump the architects expression though.
