AD Interviews: Viktor Várkonyiv / Graphisoft

Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been an invaluable technological advancement for the architecture, engineering, construction and building management industries. But for people who don’t use it on a daily basis, BIM can seem overwhelming. This animated video breaks BIM down in layman’s terms explaining what it is, how it works and what the benefits of using it are.

Read on after the break to learn more about BIM and our interview with Viktor Várkonyi, the CFO of Graphisoft, one of the frontrunners in BIM development.

One of the unique things about BIM is that it allows for more collaborative work by seamlessly connecting all aspects of design. When any modification is made to the building it shows up in all of its other components, including floorplans, sections and elevations. BIM also allows for building simulation, which is critical for the engineering process and building management after its construction.

And BIM’s popularity among the industries is only set to increase. An article by the Associated Builders and Contractors noted that over the next two years work involving BIM will increase 50% on average for contractors and that by 2015 79% of contractors will be using BIM at a high level.

In order to more fully understand BIM, we also spoke to Viktor Várkonyi, the CFO of Graphisoft, one of the frontrunners in BIM development. “Our building process is involving hundreds of people and most of them don’t understand BIM. So having a very easy solution - you just take it and you use it without any training and you can access this data - [is important]”, explained Várkonyi. Graphisoft’s BIMx for iPads and iPhone provides a natural, game-like experience to navigate and explore any 3D architectural project. Watch the full interview with Várkonyi above and check out the video below to go on a Bimx virtual simulation of a building.
