Butcher’s Bridge / SADAR + VUGA
Designed by SADAR + VUGA, the new Butcher’s Bridge concludes the arrangement of the Jože Plecnik’s covered market from the mid-1930s. It connects the market area on the Adamic-Lunder embankment with the new market area on the regulated Petkovšek embankment.

The proposal envisages a ‘house-bridge’ with three horizontal platforms. The lower, the upper and the canopy platforms determine two levels of covered space above the river. The dimensions of the platforms, 39×19 m, enable a continuation of both the market and the public event area on the lower and upper levels of the bridge. All three platforms are equipped with slender bell-shaped columns that alternatingly widen either downwards or upwards, tied to a homogeneous spatial structure. The columns are placed onto the platforms in two longitudinal rows, which leave open a central space on each level. The columns are set at a distance from all edges of the platforms so that the space between the fence of the platforms and the columns offers room for a three-metre passageway.
The entire bridge construction is made of concrete. The columns are of artificial stone, the paving of the platform is terrazzo. All three platforms are perforated and covered with glass floor tiles that are permeated by diffuse light.
The lower platform connects the regulated Petkovšek embankment with the lower level of the covered market and with vertical communications in front of the entrance into the new car park. Here, a permanent commercial area develops around the column bases, intended for non-foodstuff programme. Commercial activities continue from hereon to Petkovšek embankment.
A spiral ramp, intended for pedestrians and cyclists, connects the lower and upper levels at one end and reaches to the surface of the river at the other end, where it is prolonged onto a pontoon raft – stopping point for boat traffic on the river.
The upper platform extends the surface of the central market onto the area above the river. The platform ends above Petkovšek embankment as a ‘city balcony’, vantage point for the events on the embankment. Here and along both longer sides benches are placed. The central part of the upper level is destined for public cultural events.
The upper level is covered by the canopy platform, which offers shade as well as shelter in adverse weather conditions.
The proposal for Butcher’s bridge introduces two different urban atmospheres above the Ljubljanica. The lower level is fuller and noisier, with an evenly dispersed daylight. The upper level is prone to changing, full of people at one point and empty at the next, sunlit in the afternoon, shaded during the day, but always with views of the activities along the river and on Petkovšek embankment.

Sadar-Vuga’s projects may be very suitable for creating and developing a new identity, new landscape if you wish, in the dispersed city. However, building such an enormous and iconic structure, by tectonic and its form, in the heart of the compact city may be considered as a major urbanistic flaw. The context of the time in which plečnik has designed it’s bridge was completely different. As you can see on the image, the massive covered market is situated on the right bank and on the opposite bank there are only 2 stories high medieval suburban houses. Plčenik plan was to demolish them and to form a new square of classicist palaces on the spot. In this context big structure like plečnik’s or sadar-vuga’s bridge is justified, however in reality they would give a sens of uselessness, oversizeness, they would feel alien to the genius loci. For conclusion, the winning project is in this sense much more suitable.

Too bad it is not going to be built, since this was just a competition proposal. They are actualy building a (too) simplystic bridge, a flat surface with glass railing.
This one would be much better IMHO.
