Amadip.esment is a foundation committed to people with intellectual disability. Palmanova centre was founded with the idea to integrate these people by means of its professional training and occupational placement programmes.

This project was conditioned by the program characteristics which integrated, in general, uses referred to training, the catering industry (production and consumption) and the sale of products. All these facets needed to have the possibility to be linked among each other without any interference.

Another requirement to comply with comes as a consequence of being located by the motorway, on a public car park; also the location of the plot of land needs to be taken into consideration, which is neighbouring a mass tourist area. Therefore the response would require the building itself to generate its own friendly environment as the surroundings would not provide it.

The building´s needs are overcome by using a system of patios with different characteristics, providing diversity of uses and enabling, if necessary, the autonomous operation of those uses. At the same time, the architectural solution of the patio provides a large glass surface and optimum solar lighting control as well as the qualification, separation, articulation and adaptation of the space for each use.

We understand the building from a global point of view: The same language and materials used for public spaces have been used for kitchen spaces and workshop rooms. This is due to the fact that these places (apparently used for services, or in the background) are going to be as important and crowded places as those spaces for main circulation. People with intellectual disability, when in the kitchen, at the bar, in the classrooms .... (either learning or working) must always feel free, in a comfortable illuminated environment in order to remain in harmony for a long period of time.

We propose constructive volumetric language that can be expressive and autonomous at the same time. An austere building that only needs construction materials and functional furniture that comply with the requirements awarded (acoustic, lighting, climate and cleaning requirements to mention but a few…).

We understand the building by means of merging the interior with the closest exterior. The user´s visual options are nuanced by patios, pergolas, vegetation, glass elements, porches and paving that slide from environment to environment. We could understand the building as an autonomous element that is lit up and enriched from its own hermeticism, and which is able to fully open to its environment offering a merger between its limits and the closest space surrounding it. It will all depend on the time of day.
