World’s Most Expensive Stadiums
Design, innovation and capacity are just some of the key elements when building a stadium. We have been featuring some great stadiums in ArchDaily like Herzog & de Meuron’s Bird’s Nest, for the Beijing Olympics.
However, as impressive as it may be, the Bird’s Nest cost was ‘just’ 500 millions dollars, a lot less than the ones who made Forbes top 10 list of most expensive stadiums.
Check the complete list, after the break.
10. ANZ Stadium / Sydney Australia / $624 million
9. Lucas Oil Stadium / Indianapolis, USA / $675 million
8. Safeco Field / Seattle, USA / $656 million
7. Soldier Field / Chicago, USA / $714 million
6. The Emirates Stadium / London, England / $770 million
5. Rogers Centre / Toronto, Canada / $930 million
4. Stade de France / Paris, France / $974 million
3. Madison Square Garden / New York, USA / $1.1 billion
2. Olympic Stadium / Montreal, Canada / $1.4 billion
1. Wembley Stadium / London, England / $1.5 billion

New Cowboys stadium in Arlington, TX is rumored to be 1.2 billion and should be on the list.
That’s very surprising, considering that Beijing’s Bird’s Nest is the world’s largest steel building, and the design was submitted by Herzog & de Meuron.
Labor costs in China probably kept the Bird’s Nest’s overall price tag lower than what it would cost to build in the US.
Shame the capacities weren’t listed alongside the cost. And I dare say the birds nest would have featured if built in the US or Europe through cost of labour.
This information is already dated. The new Yankee Stadium cost approximately $1.5 billion.
Wow, what a poorly researched list. As already noted there are a couple of glaring omissions.
Yes, the list is dated, but how are these stadiums being rated as most expensive? By the total cost of construction? The land the sit on? Facilities contained within them? Overall cost to build and maintain? Besides the omissions, some of the facilities listed are being considered so expensive due to the comparative value of yesterday’s dollar versus today’s dollar….Right?
China doesn’t pay it’s workers anywhere near what the rest of the world does. If the Chinese workers were paid on level with the workers that built these other stadiums then the Birds Nest would have easily topped the list.
regarding the Bird’s Nest:
“The removal of the elements helped to bring the project under the reduced construction budget of $290 million, from an original $500 million”
It also states $430 million on the same page though.

The birds nest has an interesting skin but when I was inside it I found it was actually disappointingly boring.
As for the Montreal Stadium almost topping the list, that has more to do with the interest that had to be paid for decades since they could not pay the debt as soon as anticipated.
missing is the new yankees stadium. $1.2-1.6 billion
What was the fee of the architectural firm?. That would be great to know, what was the overhead, what size was the architectural team and the type of consultants to complete this work, what about production time, etc, that would be more productive information for us as readers.
falta aqui o estádio do glorioso.
