Global Ministries Headquarters / Bittoni Design Studio

Once completed in 2010, the Bread of Life Global Ministries’ headquarters in Nei-hu, Taipei will be the largest church in Taiwan. Totaling over 12,000 square meters, the structure will be complete with commercial space, offices, cafe, roof deck, and of course, prayer rooms.  Only in the early conceptual stages, Bittoni Design Studio is looking to better the design with constructive criticism from people outside the design team, and who better than you!

After a little more about the project, critique their start after the break.

prayer rooms

While the building will provide a 4,000 person auditorium for weekend masses, during the week, the congregation hoped the mass space could be converted to allow for conferences and performances.  The firm’s auditorium took on a “living room” feel that would create a “non-hierarchical gathering space to be subdivided for smaller or simultaneous events.”  To do so, they opted for a centralized or more traditional proscenium design on the main floor.

The other programmatic elements are stacked above the auditorium.  A roof terrace allows users to enjoy the views of the surrounding countryside, while the transparent prayer rooms protrude from the exterior envelope to “make prayer an outward activity and a celebrated act.”

The design presented here is a start for the headquarters, yet feedback would allow the firm to create a building that would fulfill all of its potential.

Where are the floor plan? It does not show a chracter of a church… it’s like an ordinary office building.

good call. my own office has just completed a project in the area and the rules are fairly strict as to what style is allowed. aesthetically it is fairly aggressive for the area. i enjoy the fact that it is non traditional. the prayer rooms are a great idea, especially for an evangelical organization. we need plans!

Hi! my office is actually in Nei-hu. This area has a lot of introverted blocky building. Maybe this one can be a bit more extroverted to the civic life, which I believe it has the potential to.

I like the Lewis+Tsurumaki+Lewis-style imagry. However, the design speaks nothing of a church to me or anything having to do with spirituality/religion for that matter.

You’re absolutely right, I see nothing in this design representative of oppression, manipulation, lies, or control.

for me it’s just someone playing with SketchUp and Photoshop.
No contemplation spaces and no plans, its just a comercial building
