Constituting the northern portion of the planned ‘Future Square’ in the rapidly developing Airport District of Zhengzhou, China, Atelier of Urban Architecture (AUA)‘s design is an iconic addition to the area. The proposed urban planning exhibition centre and associated landscape consists of various programs that are organized on the folding floor slabs, bringing visitors around the centre piece of the exhibition – the physical model, which itself is positioned within a sunken space on ground level. More images and architects’ description after the break.

It is proposed for the exhibition centre to be located in alignment with the proposed building cluster on the Southern plot. Through the production of a series of indexical and analytical drawings, the existing site relationships have been extracted to form a dynamic planning grid over the plot, subsequently dividing up the vast area of landscaping to create a series of public spaces. The exhibition centre itself is rectangular in plan and is carefully integrated within the landscape, bringing visitors through the building seamlessly.

The physical model, the center piece, can be viewed from various heights along the carefully planned exhibition route, guiding visitors through a variety of exhibition spaces, the screening room and the cafeteria seamlessly through a series of ramps.

The proposed façade system features horizontal mesh cladding that not only exposes the bold steel structure of the building, but also acts as privacy screens and shading devices for the various internal spaces.

The top floor houses the VIP lounge and office areas. It is not accessible by the public and has a high level view of the central model. Construction drawings are currently being produced for the building, with an anticipated completion by the end of 2013.
