The architectural proposal for the Cranes of Palermo is based on the relationship between the intervention image and the rich local history of Sicily, particularly its Baroque of scenographic and ornamented elements. Designed by De Fournier & Associados, the new proposal has as reference the poorly moderated characteristics of the Baroque, the surprise that the expression of its image causes when perceived. More images and architects’ description after the break.

The Cranes of Palermo, striking elements in the landscape of the city for 30 years, have the opportunity to become the landmark for the revitalization of the port with the deployment of a cultural and leisure center with the use of their structures, in addition to building the entire floor space of the ground floor – the square.

The formal exuberance and contrasts bring into this new design the direct relation with the 17th. century Baroque as a language. The structures of the Cranes and the new plaza will enable greater flexibility in the use and several types of events and exhibitions with space configurations varying according to the displacement of the Cranes. These volumes include: a cultural center for permanent and temporary exhibitions, library, multi-use space, cafe, shop, restaurant and terraces structured over horizontal elements of the cranes.
