UNStudio’s Retreat Exhibition Opens June 28

By Karen Cilento — Filed under: News , , ,

With the combined effort of Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos of UNStudio, the Retreat Exhibition will kick off on June 28th at KunstFort Asperen.  The exhibit, which will feature the works of 12 artists, aims to reflect different points of view on their interpretations of ‘retreat’.  The installation creates an atmosphere where “the functionality of the space is interrupted and reality is stretched.”

More after the break.

UNStudio chose the theme of ‘retreat’ for the exhibit while investigating their site inside the fortress.  The fortress’ function has drastically changed from its original purpose.  “The perception of place and space has changed…this transition from defence post to idyllic place forms the premise of the exhibition,” explained the architects.

The spatial installation “which reinterprets the organization of the fort and forms the binding element between the exhibited works” runs like a ribbon through the space, complimenting the concentric floor plan of the fortress.  The installation, with its sculpture-esque form, creates a visual aid for visitors to follow to experience the artwork.  Viewed from differing angles and different locations, the structure changes the users’ perceptions of the space each time it is looked upon.

I’m not in love with the mirrored panels incorporated into the design but the flowing white form is fantastic!

UN studio’s concept is, for me, eternally forced and far-fetched. Manipulation of form and intellect, without any sense or sensibility. Never memorable.

UN studio, for me, is a like a junkmovie with a little spark of intelligence or aesthetics i can smile at.
