We love seeing a project through fruition, and after being introduced to the collaborative vision of the Iceberg for Arhus, Denmark, we were anxiously awaiting its construction. As we have previously shared, the Iceberg, or “Isbjerget” in Danish, was designed as an iconic waterfront marker to invigorate the harbor front’s transformation from a sole industrial entity to a residential and commercial hub. Construction is swiftly progressing on the four building block, and earlier this week, the team enjoyed the project’s “topping out” ceremony.

The building’s angular massing achieves optimal views from the apartments to the sea – a functional move that takes aesthetic inspiration from floating icebergs. The sloping rooftops emphasize views and bring in natural daylight while providing stunning views out in several directions.
The 25,000m2 building will offer 210 apartments varying from 50m2 to 200m2, and is slated for completion in 2013. A mix of owner and rental dwellings allows for a broad variety of residences, from starter units to grand penthouse apartments. Its six commercial spaces range from 110m2to 211m2.
Jacob Bundsgaard, mayor of Arhus, stated, “With the topping out ceremony of Isbjerget, Arhus passes another milestone in the development of the city’s new harbor front. Isbjerget is a signature building of international stature. It is not only the realization of a visionary work of architecture, but part of the vision of our new modern city of Arhus as well.”
