Various Architects’ proposal for Tingvalla Utstikkeren

Various Architects from recently shared their entry for the Tingvalla Utstikkeren competition which was organized by the Norwegian Property (NPRO). The competition asked participants to design a new restaurant and service building at the Tingvallautsikkeren, part of the popular Aker Brygge waterfront in Oslo.  Various Architect’s proposal created a new public destination that would attract users throughout the seasons by providing an interesting public space, as well as space for a restaurant.

More images and information about the proposal after the break.

The building’s placement along the north side of the pier creates a public promenade along the south-east side. This activates the existing amphitheater stairs toward the marina and opens a viewpoint on the outer pier.

The restaurant area consists of two volumes that have differing relationships with their surroundings.  Since the lower volume is situated closer to the pier, it is highly transparent to allow a visual cross-connection through the space.  The upper volume is more private and projects out toward the water, connecting users with the fjord. The two volumes are connected with a double height entrance area.  The volumes’ internal flexibility enables the two spaces to be used as one restaurant to accommodate larger functions, or separate spaces to allow various functions to be conducted simultaneously.   The large glass facades are removable, allowing it to adapt to the climate and available natural light.

Massive long wooden logs are randomly distributed along the pier and function as outdoor seating.  The logs penetrate the glass facades, connecting the interior and outdoor, and serve as furnishing for the restaurant.
