At the seventh edition of the International Architecture Festival from June 27-July 1, eme3‘s project brings back the action to the public space. They aim to recover the format of former editions and take back the interventions and organization of activities in different locations of the city center. These locations include some lots and spaces that were abandoned and fell into degradation. Their topic, ‘Bottom Up’, has a participation of around 50 participants coming from 17 countries. More images and architects’ description after the break.

The project is studying and debating about the creation that comes from the grassroots, with initiatives generated through the civil society, fruit of the collaboration between different stakeholders. From the program, we’d like to highlight the organization of the workshops in different places of Ciutat Vella, open to the general public and free of cost. Some of the activities that most attract the attention due to the possibility of including citizen cooperation are the Raval Generator, proposed by the berliner bureau Raumlabor, that are participating for the second year in a row. This will be the first opportunity to watch and take part of a construction on-site part of an experimental workshop that seeks the interaction between the team of Axel Timm, architecture students and local associations of the Raval.

The Institute of Placemaking is going to build a structure based on recovered materials. On site workshops will be implemented with do-it-yourself methodologies and systems that gaurantee the continuity of the resources. Pez Estudio from Madrid will present their methodological test to generate physical infrastructures, enhancing the knowledge of the own neighborhood and strengthening links that facilitate citizen’s self-management. The collective BodyLab, formed by designers and architects, will organize an experimental workshop where body and space will be confronted in a performance through installations, images and sounds, where the empty space converts in an opportunity for the body to rethink itself and explore the limits of its possibilities.
