The Kulturcampus designed for Frankfurt, Germany by Adjaye Associates rests on the idea of grouping a city’s most important cultural institutions into the heart of the city. The focus is on creating a micro-city on the city that is currently occupied by the University of Frankfurt, which will be vacated in 2014. This micro-city is intended to be diverse collection of uses that will provide a space of gathering for the adjacent neighborhoods of the campus.

The site is designed to bring together people of diverse interests and foster interactions and culture from these groupings.  This includes cultural industries, academics, residents of the area and office workers in the region.  The intention is to create new synergies that will evolve out of the interaction of these different creative disciplines.  Cultural programs produce a differentiated cultural experience.

The main performing spaces of the mico-city are combined into a central public space.  The campus is multi-functional and will include retail spaces, cafes, and a market hall.  The perimeter is porous, allowing sirendipitous discoveries between people with the intention of visiting the space and people cutting through the site.  Multiple access points enable a free flow of circulation that opens up into the city.  The programs are also arranged vertically, so that mixed uses occur not only laterally across the site, but vertically through the building as well.
