This building has an ephemeral quality despite the use of concrete, filled with light and air. The large amount of surface area given way to windows that gaze out into the landscape creates the dialouge between the natural and man-made. Coupled with the austere association that we have with concrete, this makes for an fascinating dualism. The focus here is peripheral, almost as if the architecture is asking you to step out of it – visually at least. At first the arches do seem misplaced, but the way in which they meet the floor slab, almost at a point, makes the structure appear to be extremely light and reinforces the concept of weightlessness that seems to be carried out through-out.
The bareness is appropriate for a library, which contains the knowledge collected from books and eventually, the landscape beyond the architecture.

I agree…such an strikingly peaceful space. Although the crisp purple sky doesn’t hurt.

Seems like some of you are missing the point. You don’t see magnificent interiors like this very often, because someone is always overdoing it. There’s an elegant (and I presume cost-effective) simplicity here — light and air — with some simple, classic forms in concrete and reflected light. Beautiful photos. Wow, I envy those students, having a space like that to lift their minds while they study.
