The project of the City Theatre, designed by David Vecchi & , stems from the intent to promote the independent play and recover the pioneer spirit that distinguished Broadway at the beginning. Exhibited in the ESA gallery as part of the Selon du Dessin in Paris, The proposal is for a mixed-use building that, in addition to the main function of theater, welcome inside offices and residences. More images and architects’ description after the break.

Underlying this choice there is an economic reason. Given the high price of land in Manhattan, is convenient, in order to maximize the potential value of the plot, thicken a greater number of functions within a single building. Part of the proceeds, due to the sale or rental of the real estate units will also have the basic task of funding the theatrical activity as long as the entire structure will not become economically independent and therefore able to provide a genuinely free and really unconditional cultural activity.

    Blah blah blahdi blah.
Are you sure the concept wasn’t just to make a ‘Koolhaas’?

We have to start separating architecture from rendering.
Architecture today requieres more architecture less rendering. Days after the 126th birthday of Mies van der rohe.

I don’t buy this for a second. Have the costs of building such a structure been factored into this equation?

are we to take this proposal seriously? it would clearly be dismissed and prosecuted as plagiarism in any other discipline. the night rendering is particularly egregious. arch daily must want to alienate is readers with such insulting garbage.

      Take it easy dude!
It’s not like it’s an ArchDaily project. They’re just letting us know… If you don’t like it, go read another article. Are we supposed to love everything we read and see here? I don’t think so. It’s not like the article is badly written, is it? ArchDaily is a source of information (i.e.: newspapers).

no, I agree with this joe guy. You are responsible for the quality of what you publish. Can you imagine A+U or el-croquis publishing this? Archdaily only does this because they know it is controversial. This is one of the reasons I don’t read this site much anymore, not that they care about one persons opinions when their numbers continue to grow.

        to kgf,
as you probably know, in general the comments on this site are often negative, the value of the project is also evaluated by : like, tweet, and links to other sites.
I find it wrong to impose your vision, for me is a good project.
