With the aim to provide a portable building solution that is tailored to suit the site, climate and desired learning outcomes in an efficient, sustainable and adaptable way, Architectus designed a system titled, eMOD (Educational Modular Offsite Design). It is an adaptable modular design system comprising two separate modules 4.5m x 15m that can be configured to create a building solution to suit the site, climate and learning outcomes. More images and architects’ description after the break.

This interactive educational design App allows you to explore, discover and create possibilities of the eMOD system. The App has three modes, Learn, Create and Cheat. Each mode provides an opportunity to experience the versatility of the eMOD system, and find a solution to future proof your school: - Learn Mode: Teaches the user the fundamentals of what eMOD is and how to use it. - Create Mode: Allows the user to design, develop, test, furnish and build a modular building (in a 3D environment). - Cheat Mode: Enables the user to choose from a number of pre-defined scenarios which demonstrate eMOD’s adaptability across any location, climate or building type.

eMod is based on the notion that architecture is interactive. Height, scale and form allow users to engage and interact with the building in a way that develops a relationship and creates ownership. The diversity in footprint accommodates the essential requirements of student numbers, budgets and connection with existing facilities. Elements such as covered external areas, louvred walls and external devices combine to provide an outcome that blends learning environments and architecture in a new and innovative way that responds sustainably to suit site, climate or learning outcomes.

In order to facilitate the integration and connection of the building to its context and setting, the eMOD employs a range of features to help tailor your building to specific site requirements. The rigid prefabricated construction is designed to sit on screw piles or in some cases directly on the ground, which minimizes the need for intrusive siteworks. Extensive glazing and shading enables excellent visual connections to the landscape. The eMOD allows you to explore options for the articulated slot device which provides the use of the external envelope of the building for both learning and living.

The eMOD system has been designed with many sustainability features at its core, chief among which is the guiding principle of – ‘doing more with less’. The 2 simple modules can be optioned and arranged to suit and adapt to a variety of contexts, climate conditions and topographies, and to do so with minimal assistance from additional resources.
