The Palhano Ecomarket, designed by Studio Guilherme Torres, is located in Londrina, Brazil. Aiming to create a milestone for the city and a reference in sustainable architecture, the project is under the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design®) certification and applies concepts of illumination and natural ventilation, as well as the use of local materials and resources, wide energetical economy and the rational use of water.

The market was conceived to aggregate different commerces related to food product shop, just like in traditional municipal markets which are found in big cities. The selected region is located in front of an artificial lake in a prime area of the city. A big challenge was to overcome the 25macclivity of the lot, respecting the maximum height of 7,5m imposed by the local legislation. After extensive excavation of the lot, the project managed to camouflage all the structure of services and the garages, leaving only the commercial floorarea in sight. On the upper level, a big observation deck with hanging gardens accommodates 3 restaurants with a privileged view of the surroundings.

The core ideaof the concept created by the architect is to develop the self-esteem of the citizens of Londrina, through the consolidation of the project as a symbol of sustainable development for the city, as well as a pioneer enterprise in this direction. The project relies on the support of an environment consultancy company called Master Ambiental, and also has the project execution headed by the engineer Edgar Marin. The initiative comes from the real estate group Raul Fulgêncio. The project has just been awarded with the Planeta Casa Award, from Abril Publishing House, that disseminates the actions that promote sustainability in Brazil.
