Although the name of the city is pronounced as “Shangai” in Spanish, it should be spelled as “Shanghai”.

It’s hard to judge the first place by those small images, furthermore, it’s really weird that they wouldn’t release more images, for confidentiality reasons?? wtf is that supposed to mean?? Anyhow, the other two projects, 2nd and third, are quite attractive. The 2nd place makes obvious references to prehispanic architecture, which is something already done in mexico many times since the 60s. Still nice project. Third place is my favorite.

TO ANSWER JLBR COMMENT…. YES THE SECOND PROPOSAL MAKES REFERENCE TO PREHISPANIC ARCHITECURE, AND IS OUR IDENTITY AS MEXICAN ARCHITECTS, IS THE MOST RICH AND OLD ARCH. HERITAGE WE HAVE, YOU JUST CANT SAY OOOH ITS BEEN DONE BEFORE… OFCOURSE ITS BEEN DONE BEFORE!! ITS TAKING THE ESSENCE OF OUR PAST IN A CONTEMPORARY SOLUTION FOR THE WORLD TO EXPLORE.. REMEMBER… NOT EVERYONE HAS BEEN IN MEXICO TO VISIT OUR PREHISPANIC RUINS!

AGAIN I THINK IT WAS THE BETTER PROJECT OVERALL!! RESPECTFUL TO OUR HISTORY AS MEXICANS BUT MODERN FOR OUR TIME. CONGRATS.

Mariano says:

I, as a mexican, and an architect, must say im sick of “neo” representation of pyramids, or even taking pyramids as a “concept” im mexican, i never lived in a pyramid, i dont know anyone who has lived in one, pyramids are part of aztec culture, which fused with spanish culture and created MEXICAN culture… so i dunno whats all that hype about “pyramid concepts” (and i am personally sick of it, oh, and also the bright colors as a meaning of mexico).

proposal 2? damn, that is taking pyramids and translating it into a “contemporary solution”?? gosh i thought it was more like taking MansillaTuñon’s project for the Cantabria Museum doing a scale to fit to shanghai, or maybe NietoSobejano’s project for MORITZBURG??, i might take it as again, mexican culture fusing with spanish one… from that side i can accept it, but also… those stolen projects where done almost 10 years ago… argh, i dunno, i guess first of all for a good competition you need a good jury… keep having fun my friends

    Not an Architect says:

I am not an architect and I have not lived in pyramids either but when you see that sort of concept you do connect that to Mexico. Mexican culture is not only a fusion between Spanish culture and Aztec culture; we had many other prehispanic cultures where the buildings were similar. I think 2nd Place is really the best proposal.
I am interested on knowing what would you propose then, if you are sick of bright colors and pyramids? Would you use a bleeding Jesus and crosses? Smog , traffic and soccer balls? A gigantic cactus? Maybe you did propose something and your proposal was not picked by the jury, don’t feel bad everyone has a different taste.

I find the third place very interesting, full of sensorial experience… i think it’s the best! the second one looks too familiar architecture, remember the first place at 2006 Arquine’s competition, this project looks the same, i feel sorry for this guys but they need to be original themselves. try to start making some original architecture, not Mansilla Tunon projects or Nieto Sobejano’s…the first one really sucks!
