The Wangfujing Center in Beijing, China is a mixed-use space designed by Latitude Studio. The intention of the proposal is to design an architectural solution that provides a container for an endless possibility of experiences. To achieve this, Latitude Studio considered the role of the atrium in Roman architecture, which injects the space with light and air.

The approach to the project was first considered on different levels of spatial conditions: social, urban, and architectonic. The mass of the program is manipulated with the objective to create a sectional urbanism where opposite activities and uses are set up in a successive sequence. The proposal is based on a building with five facades, while fulfilling the requirement of square footage allotted to each program including retail, hotel, and apartments, in order to generate an interior space. A system of void spaces introduces a spatial configuration which brings daylight into the cube, and views between the surroundings.

A steel structural system is proposed in order to generate maximum efficiency and versatility both in construction and in program. Therefore, in order to make the construction adaptable to either residential, hotel, office space or hall parameters as desired. The ground floor is for commercial purposes. East, south and West facades are for residential. The North façade is for hotel space.
