Mark di Suvero's Sculptures featured on Governors Island

Just 800 yards from the tip of Lower Manhattan, Governors Island is hosting Mark di Suvero’s monumental sculptures, organized by Storm King Art Center. The sculpture garden is open to all visitors to Governors Island, which will be accessible this season until September 27, 2011. More images and information after the break.

The show will include 11 works spanning more than three decades, making this exhibit the artist’s biggest New York survey since 1975.  Mark di Suvero’s work is architecturally scaled, imposing a physical and historical reference to industry.  The pieces are composed of industrial cast-offs, such as I-beams that have been painted, giving them an artificial quality.

This temporary site for di Suvero’s work is much smaller than the land allotted to his sculptures in the sculpture park in upstate New York, but the curators at Governors Island have used the topography of the island to their advantage.  They’ve achieved this by looking beyond the island itself, placing the sculptures with an eye to the views of Manhattan and Brooklyn and the activity along the waterfront.  The sculptures are arranged to be discovered serendipitously and incorporated within the other on-going events on the island.

This exhibit is just one of many that Governors Island has to offer; check their website to read about other events going on on the island throughout the summer.
