This winning project for the Master Plan of Juzne Centrum in Brno, Czech Republic comes from CHYBIK+KRISTOF ASSOCIATED ARCHITECTS selected for the Southern Moravian Region Award 2010. The alternative master plan of “Juzne Centrum” is located in a big brownfield and is driven by local activists groups and the academic institution of Faculty of Architecture at University of Technology in Brno. The project incorporates the principles of ecology and economy towards common good and creates a new economic urban design.

More from this project after the break.

The objective of the project is to create a sustainable economic city in the place between the old and the new train station in the city of Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic. The project provides an alternative to the existing local plan which does not exploit the full potential of the space. Its mission is to harness the potential of the urban space. The master plan offers clarity and simplicity in the overall concept, combined with diversity and variation in possible scenarios of future development.

The relocation of the center of the city plan creates a potential recuperation of the largest brownfield of Brno by charging a dead space of the city with activity and meaning. The projected densification of Brno is also an indication that a new master plan is both relevant and vital to the continued development of the city. The size of the site is bigger than the entire medieval city center with the ability to accommodate a growing population. It offers an opportunity to build a new modern sustainable city according to the social, economic and ecological needs of the 21st century.
