The diagram of the entry sequence courtyard is well handled – just a shame about the fortress black earth approach in concept. Where can life be found here? Where is the hope?
In this project H&M have lost the sense of scale. The building is dehumanising.
It could be described as grabbing fluid lava and setting it in to a structural box. Black and hot, hard and harsh.

A lava field set in the middle of the city – externally dull with emptiness and no life.

No love here.

As for ‘fitting in’ with the urban environment Santa Cruz like much of Tenerife is a real mess of styles – they seem to have gone for islands of quality like TEA and the Auditorio, (and to a lesser extent the new Bus Station and Cortes del Ingles) and will then tidy up in between.
