‘Trimo Urban Crash’ has announced its winners from this year’s installation competition which challenged students to design a public architectural installation for Nove Fužine, a specific residential neighborhood in Ljubljana, Slovenia using Trimo materials. The theme for this year is: The Life Stand – an architectural intervention which is more than a tribune for watching games or events. It is a point of interaction and inspiration for inhabitants and visitors of all ages, interests and social standing, and simultaneously offering an answer to complex architectural and social questions common to many European urban residential areas with its original and well-thought out approach.

First Place for Realization was awarded to Wojciech Nowak and Martynika Bielawska of Poland.  The proposed object is for the everday space that characterizes Fuzine’s southern edge – sports ground, festival area, meeting point.  It is inspired by the idea of a catalyst for existing vibrant atmosphere of the place, enhancing it rather than changing.  The proposed structure is located between two sport courts and uses the narrow lawn stripe to activate the empty boundary line for new playgrounds, or festival area.   Its use is flexible which allows visitors use the space as spectators of a sporting event, or for a visit to the park or a day at a festival.

Second Place was awarded to “BEYND” by Matej Ramšak and Aleksi Vicic of Slovenia. The goal of this project was to create new micro-environments through form for the varied and numerous activities that take place in the playgrounds between the urban environment of Fužine and the more intimate and natural environment of the Ljubljanica.   The programmatic proposal is embodied in a clear and simple linear volume, which decomposes into pleasant and half-intimate little seperate spaces, and ends in the park by the river. It thus offers a wide range of uses, relatively simple for construction and the same time durable.  The installation can be used as a spectator stand for sports and other events, but can be adjusted for park goers.  It allows for the variation between very public spaces to be shared with many people, such as the platform which can be used as a stage, as well as private spaces for intimate moments with friends.  The versatility of the block transforms the installation into the potential for a range of experiences.

Third Place was awarded to “NSTUD” by Gabriel Xie of New Zealand.  The design consists of two primary faces, one facing towards the grass field in the north and the other facing towards the school towards the north-west. The north-west face consists of a retractable projection screen for digital media. The audience can view the screen from outside or inside the space.  The north face of the design consists of a raised platform for the stage facing the grass field, which is able to accomodate a large crowd of audience. The north-western end of the design can be used as the backstage during this time.  Due to its proximity to the school the design can be used as an extended class room or play area, a safe haven for the students.  The space can be used as a formal gathering space for different institutions such as the school, residents and local businesses.
